It was 6:45 AM and Jeff Heotzler Jr. was walking down a cold,
lonely Pacific Ave last Friday morning to a place called Sister
Jeans Kitchen. He was to begin his food drive that the Gamblers
Classic racers were told about prior to the event, ran this past
weekend indoors at Boardwalk Hall. This 3rd year college student
and semi pro racer was not going to win the feature race this
evening, but he won the hearts of the folks he met during his
one hour visit for the food drive.
Many racers and fans brought items to donate to the event to
help Sister Jeans soup kitchen, and the fine volunteers were
pleased to accept them and thanked everyone who did so. They
exchanged stories, some about racing, some about life, but it
was an hour neither will forget. 'We didn't see anything but
smiles' said Heotzler Jr., who was joined by Gabrielle Serrano,
VP of the Make a Difference Club at Nassau College in Garden
City, NY.
You wouldn't know that the anyone was feeling down about the
dreary weather and frigid temperatures, but were patiently
waiting for the breakfast to begin. 'We want to thank all of the
fine people who donated items for the food drive, and thanks to
them, the people at Sister Jeans Kitchen have a pretty good idea
how we, the racing community, are. Checkered flags to all!'
