On a warm afternoon, Riverhead Raceway opened its gates to
kick off the 2009 season with a day of practice. Numerous
drivers showed up to shake off their
winter rust.
Blunderbusts had some of their top competitors from the 2008
season on hand to take some laps. Among them were Tommy “The
Wild Child” Walkowiak, Timmy Mulqueen, Ray Shannon, Tom
Pickerell, Rob Bader, and Terry Stiles.
The Chargers came out onto the track with a very recognizable
new entry, Erin Dumicich, in the #95, took her first laps in her
new Charger car. Sharing the track with her brother, Frank
Dumicich Jr., 2008 champion Chris Turbush, Timmy Solomito,
Daryn Miller and Jay Henschel.
The Late Models had some of their strongest racers practicing in
Kevin Metzger, Roger Oxee, Scott Kulesa, Artie Pederson, Doug
Renalds and the 2008 champion Tom Rogers Jr.
The Modifieds had a good car count for practice, on hand were
defending champion Bill Park, Chris Young, Chuck Steuer, Justin
Bonsignore, Larry Altholtz and Eddie Brunnhoelzl III.
Also taking laps for the mods for the first time was the
daughter of two-time Riverhead Raceway champion John Fortin, 16-year-old Amber Fortin in the #04.
Three Figure 8’s were taking practice, the 2008 champion Roger
Maynor, who will be looking for his 100th career win, went
around the track with two rookies. Kenny Hyde Jr. in the #85, and
the #66 Johnny Vullo, both young drivers were very impressive.
The Super Pro Trucks had some of their top drivers taking laps, Frank
Dumicich Jr., Roger Turbush, Greg Podlaski, and 2008 champion
Lou Maestri.
The Legends had a pretty big field of cars on hand for practice
among them were returning 2008 champion Timmy Solomito, Tom
Sherman, Joe Sedotto, Anthony Cacioppo, Johnny Brand, Silas
Hiscock Jr., Paul Dodorico, Tony Naglieri, Silas Hiscock Sr.,
James Pape Jr.
The cars and stars of the Enduros were on hand with 13 Grand Enduro cars, nine 4/6-cyl. trucks,
15 8-cyl. enduros, 10 4- and 6-cyl. enduro drivers.
