Long Islanders Collect
Top Fives at Bethel
By Tracy Chirico
Long Island Legends drivers Johnnie Gloor
IV and Kevin Nowak made the trip to Bethel Motor Speedway this
past Saturday, each hoping to end Mike Alcaro’s winning streak
and collect the $300 payday guaranteed to the event winner.
While Alcaro once again edged out the competition to grab his
third win in as many weeks, both of the Long Island drivers
captured top five finishes.
Gloor and Nowak both competed in the same heat race, finishing
second and third, respectively. By virtue of the heat finishes,
Gloor started the feature fourth, with Nowak directly behind in
sixth.
Mark Tischler started the race on the pole, with Alcaro on the
outside pole. Tischler got out to the early lead, with Alcaro
taking second. Gloor and Matt Maring put on a side-by-side
battle for third, with Maring finally grabbing the spot on lap
two. The caution was displayed on lap four, as John Hugate
suffered a broken trailing arm and spun in turn three. Tischler
and Alcaro restarted on the front row, and Tischler again worked
his way out front. Alcaro pulled to the inside of Tischler, and
Alcaro was the first across the line to complete lap eight.
Meanwhile, Gloor and Maring were again side-by-side fighting for
third. On lap seven, Gloor took third. Maring began to drop back
in the field, and Nowak grabbed fourth on lap eight. The top two
cars had formed a breakaway, and began to pull away from the
rest of the field. Tischler would not let Alcaro have the win
easily, as he looked both inside and outside to make the pass.
When the checkered flag flew, Alcaro and Tischler were nearly a
full straightaway ahead of the field, but Alcaro was the one
sitting in Victory Lane. Gloor finished third, with Nowak
fourth.
The Legends division runs again at Bethel Motor Speedway on
Saturday, May 23.
