Opening Weekend At
Riverhead Raceway Awash
It was truly a lost weekend at Riverhead
Raceway this past Saturday and Sunday forcing promoters Barbara
and Jim Cromarty to call both the Saturday and Sunday programs
off. The 2009 campaign will now debut this Saturday evening May
9th with a busy seven-feature event program.
With a steady rain falling and cold temperatures at 1:00 pm
Saturday the Cromarty's decided to pull the plug on the NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series opening night due to the less than
favorable conditions.
This Saturday night the entire race card set for May 9th will
now usher in the new race season with the Chargers competing in
a 30-lap, double point race with time trial qualifying. Joining
the Chargers are the NASCAR Modifieds, Figure Eights,
Blunderbusts, Super Pro Trucks, Legend Race Cars and a Grand
Enduro. The Super Pro Trucks will also run for double points,
with heat race qualifying.
With seven main events to be contested for the May 9th show,
time trials for the Chargers will go green at 4:00 pm and main
event racing will start at 5:30 pm. The pit gates will open at
11:00 am and practice is set for 1:30pm.
After the wash out Saturday night the Cromarty's were still
hopeful to get the Sunday Enduro and Legend Race Car show on
Sunday, but the weather only got worse and just 45-minutes
before the slated 12:30 pm start time the decision was made to
cancel the show.
On the schedule the rain date for Sunday was to be this week,
Sunday May 10th, but with that being Mother's Day the show will
not be run that afternoon for obvious reasons. All Enduro
drivers pre-registered for this past Sunday May 3rd will now
find those entries good for Sunday May 24th, the next Sunday
Enduro show. Drivers in the Grand Enduro and 8-Cylinder Enduro
classes that have races on Saturday night May 9th & 16th will
have to send a new entry for those stand alone races, as your
May 3rd rain-out will only be credited towards May 24th.
