Perfect Night For Racing
by Ryan McGrellis

It was a beautiful night for racing as fans packed the stands at Riverhead Raceway. On the card Saturday night were Super Pro Trucks, Late Models, Chargers, Modifieds, Island Slide Drift demonstration, a Mini School Bus Figure-8 and a 4cyl. Demolition Derby.

The first feature to hit the track were the Super Pro Trucks, with a 17 truck field ready to go 20 laps. Starting on the pole would be the Tonino's Pizza #95 of Erin Dumicich with Eddy's Long Island RV Center #30 of Shaun Gouldsbury on the outside. At the drop of the green Dumicich and Gouldsbury would race side by side. The first caution would come out on lap 2 as a lot of side by side and three wide racing resulted in a flat tire for the #15x of Rob McCormick. The restart would be yellow flagged for a flat tire on the Bill Lyons Equipment #81 of Chris Turbush. The restart would come two laps before the yellow flag was thrown again for Erin Dumicich as her second place truck suffered a flat on lap 4. The restart would see Gouldsbury taking the lead with the Gershow Recycling #1 of Lou Maestri coming to second. Maestri would take the lead away from Gouldsbury on lap 9 coming to the inside off turn four. The Marcello Masonry #88 of Roger Turbush would follow Maestri and come to second getting around Gouldsbury on lap 10. The caution would come out one lap later on lap 11 for Gouldsbury who would hit the wall hard in turn two. The restart would see Maestri leading with Turbush all over his rear bumper. The final caution would come out on lap 14 as the Hollis Court Collision #66 of Mike Albasini would get a flat. The restart once again saw Maestri take the lead but with a little more of a lead as Turbush had the P.C.H.S. Racing Engines #38 of Dan Grennan all over him for 2nd. After numerous laps of great close clean racing the #1 of Lou Maestri would take the win, followed by Turbush in 2nd, Grennan in 3rd, and coming back from an early race flat to take 4th would be Rob McCormick.

The Late Models would be next out with 10 cars going 25 laps. On the pole would be the #88 Patrick Racing of Shawn Patrick with the outside going to the LaSpisa Racing #7 of Chris LaSpisa. The green flag would drop and the lead would go to Patrick with the Harley Davidson of Nassau Co. #68 of Buzzy Eriksen coming to second. Buzzy would take the lead no too much later on lap 6 getting inside Patrick off turn two. The Metzger Racing #23 of Kevin Metzger would come to fourth on lap 10 getting inside the P.C.H.S. Racing Engines
#00 of Mike Bologna. Metzger would then come to third on lap 23, getting inside LaSpisa off turn two. Buzzy would take the win with Patrick finishing 2nd, Metzger 3rd and LaSpisa finishing 4th.

The Island Slide Drift Club was next out for a little Drifting Demo. Four cars slid around the track putting on a great smoke-filled show for the appreciating crowd.

The Chargers were next out with a strong 17 car field ready to go 20 laps. The Anderson 23 Racing #23 of Tom Anderson would start on the pole with the P&M Door #96 of Frank Scimeca Jr. on the the outside. At the drop of the green Scimeca would take the lead, the caution would come out soon after for a multi car accident. Numerous cars would have to pit with all of them coming back out. The restart would see Scimeca take the lead once again with the Gershow Recycling #89 of Chris McGuire coming to third and the LMR #56 of Jay Henschel coming to fourth. McGuire would take the second spot from Anderson on lap 2 off turn four and then set his sights on Scimeca. McGuire would make his move on lap 9 off turn four for the lead going inside Scimeca for 1st. The caution would come out on lap 14 as the Carpet Express #8 of Dan Turbush got together with the Sandy Shore Building #51 of Alan Reeves. After some confrontation under the caution both drivers would be sent to the pits, ending their nights. The restart would see McGuire pulling out to a big lead with the Bill Lyons Equipment #81 of Chris Turbush making his way through the field trying to catch him. Turbush would over come two flat tires early in the race and make his way to third on lap 15 and second on lap 18. Even with the late charge nobody could catch McGuire as he’d hang on for the win with Turbush finishing second, Scimeca having a strong race coming 3rd and Anderson hanging on for a 4th place finish.

The Modifieds were next out onto the track with 16 cars going for 35 laps. The #3 of Mike Andrews Jr. would start on the pole with the Eastport Feeds #15 of Wayne Anderson starting on the outside. Andrews would take the lead at the drop of the green with the Smithtown Nissan #20 of Bill Park coming to second and the sponsor wanted #51 of Justin Bonsignore coming to third. The caution would come out on lap 10 as the WPW Growers #98 of Dave Brigati would spin in turn two. The restart would see Andrews lead with Park trying to hold off Bonsignore who was all over him for 2nd. The caution would come out on lap 13 for the sponsor wanted #04 of Amber Fortin as she spun on the backstretch. The caution would be back out one lap later for after a spin by the #12 of Marisa Niederauer. The restart would once again see Andrews leading with Bonsignore and Park going at it behind him. After close tight racing between Bonsignore and Park, Park would go spinning in turn 2 after contact on lap 23. Bonsignore would be sent to the rear after the incident. The restart would be how they finished with Andrews taking the dominating win, Chris Young finishing second, John Fortin third and Chuck Steuer finishing fourth.

The Mini School Bus Figure-8 race was next out and what an exciting race it was. Mike “Cheesebox” Rommeney would come to first and soon after Bob “Whiplash” Genovese decided the race would look better looking out of his back widow as he would race backwards around the track. After putting the bus up on its right side tires briefly and then making hard contact with the frontstretch wall Whiplash turned his bus in the right direction. After numerous close, close calls in the X and buses going out of their way to make it thru, the race was won by Mike Rommeney.

The 4cyl. demolition derby was just as exciting with a car flipped over early on in the race after a passenger side door hit by Jimmy White. The race was won by Garcia.

Extra: J.R. Bertuccio made his season debut at Riverhead Raceway tonight finishing 7th.
