It was a beautiful day for racing as fans packed into
Riverhead Raceway to see a full card of racing. On the schedule
for the night were a recently added Blunderbust race, Legends,
Super Pro Trucks, Chargers, One on One Spectator Drags, 50 lap
time trialed Modifieds and a 4/6 cyl. Truck Enduro.
The Blunderbusts were first out onto the track for their 20 lap
feature with 19 cars going strong. The #77 of Timmy Mulqueen
would start on the pole with the Sepe Racing #6 of Scott Sepe on
the outside. At the drop of the green Sepe would grab the lead
after a slowed start by Mulqueen dropped him back to third, and
advanced the Centereach Transmissions #64 of Ray Shannon to
second. Shannon would be all over Sepe before passing him for
the lead on lap four on the front stretch. The Unique Golf Shop
#00 of Tommy Walkowiak would make his charge through the field
coming to third on lap 3, then to second on lap 4. Walkowiak
would catch Shannon and go to the outside off turn one on lap 6.
Shannon and Walkowiak would race side by side until lap 9 when
Tommy would pull out ahead for the lead. The Pickerell Clam #4
of Tom Pickerell would come to third on lap ten and on lap 19
would try for second with a three-wide pass on Shannon, after
contact between some lapped cars and Shannon and Pickerell, the
TS Motorsports #41 of Terry Stiles would come to second. On the
last lap coming off turn four with Pickerell all over Stiles,
Stiles would lose grip on the track going high in turn four
allowing Pickerell to get underneath and take second. Walkowiak
would walk away the winner, Pickerell would place second, Ray
Shannon would finish third and Scott Maliszewski and the #22
would round out the top four. Stiles was DQed for being a little
too light when going over the scales.
The Legends were next out to the track for their 20 lap feature
with the most filled field of all the divisions with 24 cars. On
the pole would be the #37 of Silas Hiscock Jr., on the outside
would be the Jack Anthony Swimming Pools #12 of Glenn Maningo.
At the drop of the green, Maningo would take the lead but the
yellow would come out just as a multi car accident in turn 2
would collect five cars. The Titan Global Security #43 of Joe
Sedotto would have to pit with a damaged bumper, but he would
make it back out under an extended yellow as numerous cars were
being checked for a leak. The caution was thrown not for the
accident but for a bad start. The ensuing restart would be
cautioned flagged once again as the Cacioppo Racing #44 of
Anthony Cacioppo had a very hard hit into the turn three wall at
the pit gate, getting him airborne and turned around. After a
check by the ambulance crew, Cacioppo would walk off on his own
power to the pits. With no laps completed the single file
restart would have Hiscock Jr. taking the lead. The #8 of John
Gloor IV would come to fourth getting around the DiCanio's Stump
Removal #83 of Gregory DiCanio after Dicanio got loose coming
off turn 2. The Nowak Racing #53 of Kevin Nowak would follow
Gloor taking over 5th from Dicanio off turn four. Gloor would
then make his move to get to third on lap 4 getting around “Wild
Bill” Hiscock going into turn three. Nowak would once again
follow Gloor coming to fourth two laps later around “Wild Bill”
Hiscock. Gloor would make his way to second dropping to the
inside of Maningo off turn two on lap 7. Nowak would follow
Gloor and take third before the yellow would come out on lap 11
for the MPZ Motorsports #20 of Max Zachem as he went spinning on
the frontstretch. The restart would determine the winner of the
race as Nowak would dive to the inside and get around Gloor for
2nd. With Nowak all over his bumper Hiscock would remain leader
until lap 14 when Nowak got inside Hiscock off turn four to take
the lead. Gloor would follow Nowak taking second and then
setting his sights on Nowak, getting all over his bumper. Gloor
would take the win after Nowak was penalized a spot for passing
on the inside before the start/finish line on the lap 11
restart. After a little bit of an on-track discussion Gloor
would take the checkered. Hiscock Jr. would be put to second
after Nowak was DQed for an altered muffler, Maningo would
finish third and the Snap-On #15 of Timmy Solomito would finish
fourth.
The Super Pro Trucks were next up for their 20 lap feature with
18 trucks ready to take the green. The Eddy's Long Island RV
Center #30 of Shaun Gouldsbury would start on the pole with the
Quilliam Racing #4 of Bryan Quilliam on the outside. The green
would fly and Gouldsbury would take the lead. The caution would
come out shortly as the Nelson's Auto Salvage #97 of “Dangerous”
Dave Koenig and the Hallock Racing #9 of Kathleen Hallock would
go spinning after Quilliam had a poor start not getting up to
speed. Koenig, Hallock and the #17 of Anthony Vechhio would all
pit and return to the track, but because the field completed the
first lap all three trucks would find themselves a lap down.
Quilliam was sent to the rear, and the restart would again see
Gouldsbury take the lead. The Bill Lyons Equipment #81 of Chris
Turbush would take second getting to the inside of the Tonino's
Pizza #95 of Erin Dumicich on lap 2. The caution would come out
on lap 8 as Hallock would go spinning after contact with
Vecchio. Under the yellow the Teddy Bear Graphics #42 of Frank
Dumicich Jr. would be sent to the rear for rough riding after
contact with the Marcello Masonry #88 of Roger Turbush. The
restart would see Gouldsbury yet again take the lead with
Turbush all over his bumper. Gouldsbury would get sideways after
contact with Turbush and that would open the door for Turbush to
pass for the lead but instead Turbush got sideways, allowing the
#15x of Rob McCormick to go outside both of them and take the
lead. The caution would come out on lap14 for Gouldsbury for a
spin after contact with Turbush. The restart would see McCormick
taking a big lead with Turbush in second and the Hollis Court
Collision #66 of Mike Albasini in third. With McCormick walking
away from the field Albasini would come to second getting to the
inside of Turbush. Turbush would fall back to to 5th allowing
the JYD Enterprises #2x of John Denniston to come to third and
the Gershow Recycling #1 of Lou Maestri to come fourth.
McCormick would take his first career win with a dominating
race, Albasini would finish second, Denniston would take home
third, Maestri would place fourth and rounding out the top five
would be Chris Turbush.
The Spectator Drags was won by Don Carisiti, with his Firebird
up against a 2008 Pontiac G8. Carasiti was one of nine Spectator
Drag competitors, including one big Dodge pickup.
The Chargers were next out with 16 cars going for 20 laps with
the Anderson 23 Racing of Tom Anderson on the pole and the
NoRegrets.com #44 of Chris Frabizio on the outside. The start
would be yellow flagged after a jump only to have the restart
yellow flagged after a spin by the Riverhead Building Supply #66
of Jerry Solomito. The ensuing restart would see Anderson
grabbing the lead after a first lap of side by side racing with
P&M Door #96 Frank Scimeca Jr, Scimeca would then fall off the
pace. On lap three Anderson would get a little too high allowing
Environmental Mgmt. Consultants #30 of Daryn Miller to grab the
lead. The Teddy Bear Graphics #42 of Frank Dumicich would come
to second getting inside Anderson, followed by the Gershow
Recycling #89x of Chris McGuire. McGuire would come to second on
lap four passing Dumicich on the inside off turn two. The yellow
would come out on lap five for the LMR #56 of Jay Henschel when
he would get a flat tire; he would also be penalized a lap for
intentionally bringing out the caution. The restart would see
Miller grab the lead and McGuire get on the outside for second
as well as the The Bill Lyons Equipment #81 of Chris Turbush
jump to third off the restart around Dumicich. After a lot of
contact between McGuire and Miller, McGuire would go spinning
and the caution would be brought out. Daryn Miller would be sent
to the rear of the field for rough riding after the incident.
That would put Turbush into the lead and Dumicich to second for
the restart. Turbush would jump out the lead and Dumicich would
fall back after contact with the NoRegrets.com #13 of Garret
Frabizio. Turbush would hang for his 15th career win, Frabizio
would have a strong race and finish 2nd, Wes Zaleski would have
a good race as well and finish third and the Carpet Express #8
of Dan Turbush would finish fourth.
The Modifieds were next to roll to the track going 50 laps in a
time trialed race with 18 cars. The Smithtown Nissan #20 of Bill
Park qualified fastest with a time of 12.045, but he would not
start on the pole after the redraw for positions. Instead the
WPW Growers #98x of Dave Brigati would be on the pole with the
Savin #11x of Chuck Steuer on the outside. At the drop of the
green Brigati and Steuer would race side by side with Park in
third. Brigati would grab the lead but the caution would come
out soon after as the Eastport Feeds #15 of Wayne Anderson and
the WPW Growers #99 of Timmy Solomito both spun off the
frontstretch. Both cars would pit and be back out before the
restart. That restart would see Brigati taking the lead and Park
coming to second getting inside Steuer then to first as Brigati
got loose in turns one and two. The SGS Stoneworks #84 of John
Fortin would come to second off turn two getting to the inside
of Brigati on lap five. On that lap the sponsor wanted #04 of
Amber Fortin would spin in turn one bringing out the caution
flag. The restart would see Park and Fortin racing side by side
for the first spot. Fortin would take the lead on lap seven with
Park in second and Brigati getting inside of Chris Young for
third. Fortin would build a big lead by lap 16 before the
caution would wave once again. This caution was for the Rose
Fence #35 of Larry Altholtz after a spin. The restart would see
Fortin taking the lead with Brigati all over Park with the #3 of
Mike Andrews Jr. all over Brigati. Fortin would build a big lead
by lap 35 when another caution would come out, this time for the
Perimeters by RBS #09 of Brad Van Houten as he went spinning.
The restart would once again see Fortin jump out to a big lead
with Park, Brigati and Andrews nose to tail. With ten laps to go
the TS Haulers #12 of Jimmy Blewett would make contact with the
Riverhead Building Supply #49 of Chris Young, sending Young
spinning, with no caution required. Fortin would build a giant
lead and to take the win, Park would finish second and after
some contact with Andrews Brigati would hang on for third with
Andrews finishing fourth.
The 4/6 cyl. Truck Enduro was the final race of the night with
26 trucks on hand to go fifty laps. The #35 would start on the
pole with the #59 on the outside. The #59 would jump out to the
lead at the drop of the green with the #45 coming to second. The
#45 would take the lead off turn four on lap seven. The #51 and
the #02 of Shawn Wanat would follow for second and third. The
#45 would spin coming off turn two after contact with the #18.
The spin would put the #51 to the lead, Wanat to second and the
#53 of Kevin Nowak to third. Wanat would make the outside move
on the #51 for the lead going 3 wide with lapped traffic on lap
13. The lapped traffic would create problems for both drivers
and Nowak would take advantage of it going to the inside of both
of them to take the lead off turn four. With the #51 falling off
the pace the #34 would take the second spot. Wanat would come to
second and then catch the leader on lap 23. The #5 of John Cozza
would come to third and catch up to Wanat by lap 44. Nowak would
build a good lead only to have it cut down within the last two
laps as his left front tire started to go flat. Sparking every
time he went around turns Nowak tried to hold on to his lead
while navigating through lapped traffic. Wanat caught up to him
on the last lap and passed him coming off of turn four. Cozza
and the #38 would also get by Nowak on the last lap. Wanat would
take the win, Cozza would finish second, the #38 third and Nowak
being able to hold on for fourth.
