Riverhead Raceway Legends regulars Kevin Nowak and JD
Abrahams both made the trip up to Bethel Motor Speedway this
weekend, each hoping to end Mike Alcaro’s winning streak and
bringing home a $300 payday. Alcaro has raced in four of the
five Legends events held at the track, and he has collected wins
in all four attempts.
By the luck of the draw, Abrahams started on the pole in his
heat race, with Nowak on the outside. Nowak was able to take the
lead in the 12-lap event, and grab the win. Abrahams finished
second.
By virtue of their heat race finishes, Nowak started the feature
from the outside pole, and Abrahams started behind him in
fourth. Alcaro sat on the pole.
On the start, Alcaro got out front, with Nowak second and
Abrahams third. The caution waved on lap four for an incident
involving John Hugate and David DeVault. Nowak was on the
outside pole for the restart. He ran side-by-side with Alcaro
before Alcaro moved out front on lap five. Abrahams was passed
by Casey Robicheau for third on lap seven, but he continued to
run solidly in fourth. Hugate spun in turn four on lap 12,
bringing out the caution. During the caution, Matt Maring
suffered an oil leak and subsequent fire, and was forced to
retire from the event. Nowak got another shot at Alcaro from the
outside pole on the restart, but Alcaro again took the lead.
Nowak stayed on Alcaro’s bumper, but the caution waved again on
lap 18 when DeVault spun in turn two. On the single file
restart, Alcaro led Nowak, Robicheau, and Abrahams. Alcaro began
to pull away, but his lead was erased by a caution on lap 23 for
Raven Schrantz. On the restart, Alcaro continued to lead.
Abrahams got turned around on the frontstretch, but he corrected
the car and continued without a caution. Alcaro collected the
win. Nowak was disqualified from the finish for refusal to go
through tech, and second went to Robicheau. Abrahams was
credited with ninth in the final rundown.
The Legends are on the schedule for every Saturday during the
month of June, with two races slated for July leading up to the
August 1 50-lap INEX national qualifier race and the August 15
LegendStock 2009 event to be held at the facility. Details are
