Justin Bonsignore Clean
Sweeps
Riverhead Raceway Cromarty Cup 50
by Bob Finan
After a long week of repairing a head gasket issue on his
NASCAR Modified Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville recovered in a
big way Saturday night at Riverhead Raceway when he won the
Cromarty Cup 50 on Miller Lite night. The $1,500 win would turn
out to be a clean sweep for Justin setting fast time, drawing
the pole and leading all 50 circuits.
Bonsignore won the Brigandi Brothers Automotive $100 fast time
award with a lap of 11.803 beating out last week's race winner
Timmy Solomito who clicked off a lap of 11.959 as young talent
continues to shine at Riverhead. With Dave Brigati joining
Justin in the front row Bonsignore broke from the pole to take
the race lead with Brigati slipping right behind the race leader
with Solomito third. Several early race cautions for minor spins
dotted the race, setting-up several double file restarts that
saw 4th place Bill Park join the first two rows.
On each double file restart Bonsignore was able to race back to
the lead with Brigati tucking right behind him while Park tested
Solomito for third on the outside before dropping back with a
tire going down. Once the race hit a rhythm Bonsignore was able
to build a comfortable lead on Brigati, who sat along in second
with Timmy Solomito third seeing Howie Brode in his rearview
mirror and that is how the quartet ran the remainder of the
race.
At the checker Justin Bonsignore in the Freightliner of Long
Island Chevy scored his 2nd career NASCAR Modified victory after
a long week in the shop. "See those guys over there" Bonsignore
said while pointing to his crew in victory lane, "they worked
their tails off and I can't thank them, Billy The Kid Engines
and my parents enough" Justin concluded by adding, "Peter Clark
did not know me from a hole in the wall but had faith to bring
Long Island Freightliner to our team and this win is for them".
Dave Brigati of Calverton assumed the points lead with his
second place finish in the WPW Growers entry with his team car
of Timmy Solomito of Islip third in the WPW Rentals Chevy. Howie
Brode of East Islip and Eddie Brunnhoelzl III of Levittown
rounded out the top five.
Roger Maynor of Bay Shore continued his domination of the Figure
Eight action in 2009 as he won his 4th feature in as many starts
in a 20-lap main event. After Michael Rommeney paced Tommy Kraft
for the first three laps of the race, Mike Mujsce made a charge
to the front taking the lead on lap 4. Mujsce led until the 7th
lap when Tom Kraft inherited the top spot during a caution when
Mujsce was cited for knocking over a cone. Kraft wheeling his
1957 Chevy did all he could to thwart the hard charging Roger
Maynor, but to no avail as Maynor put the Edward Horton Builders
Ford into the lead on lap 10. Over the final half of the race
though it seemed as though somebody turned the clock back 15
years as Maynor was not only chased by Kraft, but also by the
returning "Downtown" George Brown who made his first start of
'09. In the end Roger Maynor did achieve career win number 97
with Tom Kraft of Medford runner-up in the Kennedy Realty Chevy
and George Brown of Ft. Meyers, Fl. Third in the Middle Island
Towing machine.
With his parents making a rare visit to the track, Brian Doyle
of Ronkonkoma figured this was good a night as any to win his
first career Charger main event, which is exactly what he did.
Doyle, who is unsponsored, jumped from the pole position to the
early race lead with Frank Scimeca Jr. in tow. The duo would
survive many early race double file restarts early in the race
to leave the battle for the lead and win among themselves, while
Daryn Miller waited in the wings in third position in case they
slipped-up. No errors were forthcoming and when the checker flag
waved it was Brian Doyle, with his parents cheering him on and
scoring his first career feature event victory. Frank Scimeca
Jr. of Bay Shore was second in the ABS Pump Repairs Chevy, while
Daryn Miller of Franklin Square completed the top three with
third in his Business Brokers Chevy.
"J-Rod" Jarrod Hayes of Calverton made his return to the
Blunderbust division complete when he won their 20-lap main
event for his first win in the class since 2001. Bill Portney
Sr. had a good run early in the race leading the first six laps
before Bill Wegmann Jr. passed him on the outside on lap 7.
Portney ran second for just one lap after surrendering the lead
as Jarrod Hayes moved by and set his sights on leader Wegmann.
Utilizing an inside pass on the home stretch Hayes, steering Rob
Bader's back-up car made the pass for the lead and brought Scott
Maliszewski to second in the process on lap 12. Over the final
eight laps Maliszewski, the defending champion turned the heat
up on Hayes, but on the final turn a spinning car blocked Scott
from making a last second pass for the win. In that wild last
turn scramble to the checkers it was Jarrod Hayes taking his 4th
career win in the Robert's Express Oil mount, with "Pistol" Paul
Parisi of Riverhead rallying for second in the Signature Bagels
Chevy. "Turbo" Tom Sullivan of Massapequa drove a fine race for
third in the Custom Exteriors Lincoln.
Veteran driver Robin Vollmoeller Sr. of Riverhead topped the
50-lap 6-Cylinder Enduro field for his first win of 2009. Early
in the race Vollmoeller and his stepson Shawn Wanat diced for
the early race lead before Wanat fell victim to a flat tire
ending his night. That allowed Robin Vollmoeller in the Solar
Salon Tanning entry to put his machine on cruise control for the
victory. Jeffrey Gregor of Bridgehampton was runner-up in the
Gregor Well Drilling entry, while Gene Burbol of Brookhaven
placed third in the Gene's 112 Service Center racer.
In a car painted like a Suffolk County Police Car Jason Savoy of
Lake Panamoka won a spirited Police Car Demolition Derby. Savoy
had to survive battles with James Kilkenny of Howard Beach,
Richard Fowler of Wantagh who drove a replica of a Nassau County
Police Car and Timmy Mulqueen of Levittown. In the end it was
the Albin Avenue Auto Salvage machine of Jason Savoy scoring the
popular win. Kilkenny was named Judge's Choice and Fowler won
Fan's Choice.
