Young Makes History, Nabs
First Heat Race Win,
Second Place In Feature
15-year-old Chris Young made history on Saturday night as
Riverhead Raceway’s youngest heat race winner.
Riverhead, located in New York, lifted its age restrictions at
the beginning of the season allowing Young to compete in the
Legend Car division.
On Saturday, Young inherited the pole after the initial
pole-sitter jumped the start in the heat race. It was his race
to lose from that point forward and Young never slipped, going
on to take his first heat race win.
“Riverhead there was a very strict age policy with 16 and over
being allowed in the pits. If you are under 16, you aren’t
allowed in. It’s been a long-standing age policy. I was the
first 15-year-old to be allowed to race. It was a very big heat
race,” Young said.
Once the feature began, it was much of the same with Young
dominating the event. It took him just a few attempts to get the
race lead trying both the outside and inside lanes but once he
did slip by on lap 2, Young dominated, leading through lap 18 of
the 20-lap feature.
On track for his first heat and feature win in the same night,
lapped traffic however got the best of the young racer in the
closing laps, dropping him to second at the finish.
“I had a quarter track lead and then a lap car wasn’t paying
attention to move over for me. I don’t know what he was doing.
He was up. He was down. I didn’t know where to go. I ended up
getting by him but he cut my lead down,” Young explained of the
closing laps.
“It was a pretty good run. I’m a little disappointed but you
have to take your seconds and thirds before you can win.”
Young’s next race at Riverhead will be on July 25th. Despite the
downtime in his race schedule, he won’t be away from the
racetrack. His Dad races Modifieds at Riverhead and he’ll also
pull out his Legend car and run the open practice sessions
before the heat races begin next weekend.
