Young Charges To Seventh At Riverhead

Chris Young finished seventh in the legends race at Riverhead Raceway last weekend. Though top-10s have become the norm for Young, the night was special for the 15-year-old racer as he proudly competed against a group of friends and other hungry development racers.

“It was a fun race because Kyle Beattie, Andrea Hans and Cody Humphries came up from North Carolina to race at Riverhead. I knew it was going to be exciting,” Young said.

The competition meant hard racing for Young, who saw trouble early.

“I went from fifth to third but on lap 2, I got popped, I went around and that put me in the back,” he said of his heat run. “On the last lap, I put it in really deep into 3 on the outside. It was a drag race to the line.”

With less than a dozen cars making the cutoff, Young was anxious to know whether or not he’d be racing through the night. But, his answer wouldn’t come easy as debates between the scorer and chief steward went back and forth before Young was given the go ahead to advance.

After Beattie had wrecked his car during his heat, Young lent him his backup for the consolation race and the two battled throughout before both moved on to the feature. After starting 21st, Young settled in with competitors Beattie and Humphries, making his way through the field.

“Kyle, Cody and I were making our way through the field. There were a lot of cautions. So we just drove through and moved up,” he said.

Once the checkered flag waved, the Young had valiantly maneuvered his way into seventh after starting deep in the field.

“I’m getting a lot more comfortable at Riverhead,” Young said. “Every time I’m out there, I learn something new.”

Young has had a successful summer, making history at Riverhead as the first 15-year-old allowed to compete and following that up by becoming the track’s first heat race winner under the age of 16.

In order to reflect on his season to date and share some vacation time with his family, Young will spend a couple of weeks away from the racetrack before returning to Riverhead on August 9th.
