NELMA LATE MODEL CHALLENGE VICTOR TO RECEIVE
THE COASTAL 181 CUP
There’s nothing more rewarding than a NELMA Late Model
Challenge victory, as it’s one of the hardest wins to chock up
on a pavement late model driver’s résumé. While the win itself
is rewarding, it’s equally satisfying that the victor gets a
nice check, a beautiful girl in victory lane, and, perhaps the
most important, a trophy, which serves as an everlasting memento
of a driver’s triumph. This year, Coastal 181, which publishes
and sells books geared for racers, will reward the 2009 champion
with the first-ever Coastal 181 Cup.
“Coastal 181 and the Boyds are good friends of racing,” said
NELMA promoter J.A. Ackley. “Like what Reading Rainbow has done
for the kids of the 1980s and ‘90s, Coastal 181 has gotten us
racers to read about the sport and its history. The Boyds are
the LeVar Burtons of motorsports. But, you don’t have to take my
word for it.”
Paved Track Dirt Track by Lew Boyd chronicles two tracks in the
backyard of NELMA’s host track, Sundance Vacations Speedway. Old
Bridge Stadium in New Jersey and Nazareth Raceway in
Pennsylvania were gritty but dramatic tracks that hosted the
finest drivers from all over the Eastern Seaboard. The book
captures amazing tales of Frankie Schneider, Eddie Flemke, Al
Tasnady, the Reutimanns, Joe Kelly, Pete Frazee, Elton Hildreth
and many more, as well as hundreds of pictures from drivers'
scrapbooks, most never before published. For more information on

While the late models will compete for the Coastal 181 Cup in
the NELMA Late Model Challenge, they will be joined by three
other divisions with hot-and-heavy competition – the NELMA
Legends Car Fall Classic, NELMA Pro Truck Rumble, and the NELMA
Street Stock Fender Fury. Immediately preceding the program will
be the inaugural Hazleton Rat Rod Festival and Automotive Swap
Meet, which will run from 10AM-2PM. For competitors, pits open
at 8 AM on Saturday, October 24, with practice beginning at 10
AM. For NELMA fans, grandstands will open at 12 noon, with
qualifying to begin at 12:30 PM, and the show to start at 2 PM.
The rain date for the show is Sunday, October 25. For more
information about October’s can’t-miss event, visit
