Young Nearly Wins Bethel
Motor Madness Championship
Chris Young had a very busy weekend at
Bethel Motor Speedway, as he ran all three features in the
"Bethel Motor Madness" series and nearly walked off with the
championship.
The 15-year-old Long Island speedster started eighth in the
first 25-lap INEX Legends main, and the race got busy right away
as two cars in front of him got together resulting in a chain
reaction that damaged both his front bumper and rear bumper and
required two pit stops to repair. Restarting calmly at the tail,
Young worked his way through the field to finish third right on
the bumper of the leaders.
"I do believe I could have won that race if I hadn't been
involved in the wreck, but that's how it goes. I appreciate
everyone in the pits who jumped in and helped get the car back
together," Young said.
Later that day, the second race was a bit less stressful, as he
started his no. 49 in the fifth spot and drove a consistent race
to cross the line with his second third place finish of the day.
On Sunday, the 35-lap weekend finale saw Young take the green
from fourth place, and he was running fifth when a car got
sideways in front of him and he couldn't avoid contact. "I was
too close to avoid him. I drove over his left rear tire. We both
went to the tail and I had to pit again to have the bumper fixed
and the toe adjusted. The car was still really good after the
pit stop, and I was able to work my way back to finish fourth."
Young lost the series championship by less than ten points. "We
were close," He grinned. "I thought we had a shot at it but the
incident on lap three sent us to the back and we fell short of
being able to make up all the ground we needed. But two thirds
and a fourth is a good weekend and I'm happy with the way we ran
overall. Thanks to my family and my sponsors for everything they
do for me. It means a lot!"
The next race for Chris and his team will be this Sunday October
11th at Mountain Speedway in Pennsylvania.
