NELMA – Special Show,
Special Price – Only $10
Champions from all corners of the Northeast
are flocking to NELMA, the premier stock car racing event held
on Sat., Oct. 24 at Sundance Vacations Speedway in St. Johns,
Pa., presenting an incredible lineup of stars that’s exciting
stock car racing fans from all over. While many venues would
charge extra for a special show, NELMA is taking a different
approach – for only $10 grandstand admission (kids 10 and under
– free), you’ll get a full afternoon of stock car racing
entertainment geared for the entire family. And, for an added
bonus, show up early – any time between 10AM and 2 PM, and see
the ultra-cool rat rods or pick up a deal in the Inaugural
Hazleton Rat Rod Festival and Automotive Swap Meet.
Headlining the day will be the exciting late models for the
fifth annual NELMA Late Model Challenge, a 100-lap battle of the
best, with big money, a big trophy, and trophy queen on the
line. The three stars that put on a dynamic battle last year
will be back. Dave Macomber, a wily veteran with many years of
experience, led the majority of the race, only to be besieged by
the challenges of two others during the closing laps of 100-lap
feature. Kevin Metzger, who won his first championship at
Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway this year, raced the race of his life
during last year’s event, desperately trying to grab the lead
from fellow Long Island native, Macomber. However, it would be
Tommy Spencer Jr., from Easton, Pa., who would ride the high
side and steal the show for his second consecutive win. This
year’s entries feature many past champions, including: Mike
Sweeney (2009 Sundance Vacations Speedway champion), Larry
Fisher (2007 Sundance Vacations Speedway champion), Mike Coll
(2006 Sundance Vacations Speedway champion), Greg Kleila (2006
Riverhead Raceway champion), R.J. Oxee (2005 Riverhead Raceway
champion), and Todd Geist (1997 Sundance Vacations Speedway
champion). In addition, 2006’s surprise winner, Jarrod Hayes, of
Calverton, N.Y., will be back as one of the many contenders for
the win.
The entry-level Legends Cars feature presents a field just as
stout for the second annual NELMA Legends Car Fall Classic. Max
Zachem, the then 15-year-old from Preston, Conn., wowed the
crowd by taking the inaugural victory, the nice check, and the
larger-than-Max trophy. This year, Zachem will return, once
again with some stiff competition from along the Eastern
Seaboard. Four champions eying to take the repeat away from
Zachem include: Mike Alcaro (2009 Bethel Motor Speedway
champion), Mark Tischler (2009 Wall Stadium Champion), Jason
Palmer (2009 Waterford Speedbowl champion), Roger Coss (2008
Sundance Vacations Speedway champion), and Cameron Patrick (2007
Southside Speedway champion), among others.
New to the NELMA slate, the NELMA Street Stock Fender Fury is
shaping up to be the battle of the Keystone state versus the
Empire state. Chris Turbush, 2009 Riverhead Charger champion,
and the rest of the Long Island gang hope to see the Empire
strike back, in a rematch of family names that hasn’t been seen
since the old Pocono and Flemington Race of Champions days.
However, if the Sundance Vacations Speedway locals have their
way, they hope to watch Turbush and the rest of the New Yorkers
ride off from Sundance into the sunset.
And, for an added special treat, immediately preceding the event
will be the inaugural Hazleton Rat Rod Festival and Automotive
Swap Meet, which will run from 10AM-2PM. If you got a ratty rat
rod, want to sell some extras from the garage, or pick up some
great deals and see some real works of automotive art (i.e. the
rat rods), come down early. Spectator admission is free. For all
displaying participants, your space fee of $15 will also grant
you free grandstand admission for the day’s stock car racing
events.
Three divisions with fierce competition – the NELMA Late Model
Challenge, NELMA Legends Car Fall Classic, and the NELMA Street
Stock Fender Fury – along with the preceding inaugural Hazleton
Rat Rod Festival and Automotive Swap Meet is making Saturday,
October 24 at Sundance Vacations Speedway in St. Johns, Pa. a
worthy mid-Autumn venture. For competitors, pits open at 8 AM,
with practice beginning at 10 AM. For NELMA fans, grandstands
will open at 12 noon, with qualifying to begin at 12:30 PM, and
the show to start at 2 PM. The rain date for the show is Sunday,
October 25. For more information about October’s can’t-miss
event, visit
