Riverhead Raceway to Continue Enduro Tradition Starting Sun. May 2

It all started at Barbara & Jim Cromarty's Riverhead Raceway on a sunny Sunday afternoon of Memorial Day Weekend 1986. Now for the 26th consecutive season Enduro racing will be presented starting with an action packed card Sunday May 2nd at 12:30 pm.

On that first Enduro program there were the big 8-Cylinder Enduro racecars, which continue to compete at Riverhead, but the Enduro racing has evolved and as track announcer Jeff Bressler once noted "Riverhead is the capital of Enduro racing". Winning that initial Enduro race was former Freeport Stadium Bomber driver Pat Verwys Sr. of East Rockaway, who still makes the occasional Enduro race at Riverhead Raceway. Now aside form the 8-Cylinders there are 6 and 4-Cylinder Enduro divisions, as well a 4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro with all roads leading to the Grand Enduro division.

What is even better about the 2010 Sunday schedule for the Enduro racers is the fact that they are the only racing divisions on those programs, no Saturday night stock car classes are racing as they had in the past years. The only exception in the Enduro race cards will be the Labor Day weekend Monster Truck Spectacular which is another longstanding Riverhead Raceway entertainment tradition.

In 2009 Ray Fitzgerald roared to his first Grand Enduro title, while Dege Russell scored his second straight 8-Cylinder championship, and John Cozza won the 4/6-Cylinder Truck crown. Rounding out the 2009 champions were Gene Burbol, his first career title in the 6-Cylinder class and same for 4-Cylinder Enduro champion Matt Brown, who by the way won all seven races in 2009 and will take that win streak into the May 2nd opening day race.

All of the Enduro classes will see select Saturday dates in 2010 and the entire schedule, along with Enduro rules and entry blanks are available at www.riverheadraceway.com. The grass roots racing tradition starts its 26th year of great action Sunday afternoon May 2nd at 12:30 pm.
