Open for NELMA’s Annual Blockbuster – Sat. Oct. 23, 2010
The fall blockbuster stock car
racing event returns this year on Sat. Oct. 23 at Sundance
Vacations Speedway in St. Johns, Pa. The day’s events will once
again feature the NELMA Late Model Challenge, Legends Car Fall
Classic, and Street Stock Fender Fury. In addition, the special
pre-race Hazleton Rat Rod Fall Festival and Automotive Swap Meet
will return as well.
“Last year’s format was the best we’ve ever had - why mess with
success,” said NELMA promoter J.A. Ackley, but quickly added,
“Nevertheless, expect some interesting plot twists to this
encore.”
Last year’s NELMA Late Model Challenge featured the end of a
streak and the return of a past winner to victory lane. Tommy
Spencer Jr. of Easton, Pa., who won two consecutive NELMA races
in 2007 and 2008, had his hopes end early due to mechanical
woes. Instead, another familiar face graced victory lane, as the
2006 winner, Jarrod “J-Rod” Hayes of Calverton, N.Y., took the
Coastal 181 Cup. In 2010, will someone new enter NELMA’s
hallowed victory lane or will there be a three-peat?
In the NELMA Legends Car Fall Classic, a Connecticut native once
again stole the show. Like Spencer, the 2009 victor Max Zachem
of Preston, Conn. dropped out early to mechanical gremlins.
Instead, his Nutmeg rival, Jason Palmer of Berlin, Conn., took
the checkers. This year, will the Nutmeg State continue to reign
supreme over the Keystone State, or perhaps another state will
steal the glory?
Speaking of state-versus-state battles, the inaugural Street
Stock Fender Fury featured the battle of Pennsylvania versus the
Empire State – New York. However, Pennsylvania successfully
defended their home turf, thanks in part to the Barbushes, Joe
and Brad, whom finished first and second respectively. This
year, both sides of New Jersey (and the Garden State itself)
plan to try to take the gold in the second annual edition.
