Ernie Maynor
Memorial Greets Returning Figure 8s on June 26
One of the most beloved figures
in Long Island stock car racing, Ernie "The
Wrench" Maynor, will be remembered at Riverhead Raceway Saturday
evening
when the annual Barrasso & Sons Mason Supplies Ernie Maynor
Memorial will
highlight the night's NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program.
A Full Size
School Bus Figure Eight race plus a 4-Cylinder Enduro will
complement the
five divisions of NASCAR racing on the card.
Ernie Maynor, dubbed "The Wrench"
by then Islip Speedway announcers Mike
Calinoff and Bob Finan, wasn't only a successful Figure Eight
driver in his
Dillahunt Roofing Vega, but very popular among both his fellow
competitors
and race fans alike. Maynor's pit stall was always a great place
to visit to
listen to Ernie, with his distinct southern accent from North
Carolina tell
some great tales about the just completed race, or of the many
he had raced
in previously. Maynor in just the second race of the 1982 season
at Islip
Speedway lost his life doing what he loved the most, racing his
Figure Eight
car.
Barrasso & Sons Mason Supplies of
Islip Terrace have been a mainstay sponsor
of the Ernie Maynor Memorial over the years and will continue in
that
capacity for the 2010 edition. "Rapid" Ralph Tasso of Bohemia
comes to the
race as the defending race winner after taking the checker flag
in 2009. Of
course Roger Maynor of Bay Shore will again go all out to win
the race named
after his late father and once again will have a large cheering
section from
his co-workers from Barrasso & Sons on hand. Aside from Tasso
and Maynor the Pedersen brothers, Arne and Scott are just two of
many drivers to watch.
That list also contains the names of Mike Mujsce, Tom Ferrara,
Johnny Vullo,
the father and son tandem of Ken Hyde Sr. and Ken Hyde Jr.,
Dennis Scott and
Will "The Thrill" Farrell.
Joining the Figure Eights on the
June 26th program are the NASCAR Modifieds,
Late Models, Chargers and Super Pro Trucks. After the checker
waves on the
Ernie Maynor Memorial the huge 13-ton Full Size School Buses
will take to
the famed Riverhead Raceway Figure Eight course for some great
side by side
action during what has become one of the most popular events
ever at the
61-year old facility. The stars and cars of the 4-Cylinder
Enduro class will
get their first run under the lights in 2010 during the card and
these
lightweight cars really turn some quick laps.
Feature event racing will start
at 6:00 pm, with spectator gates opening and
pre-race practice starting at 3:00 pm. For further information
