Nowak is
Firecracker Madness King
Kevin Nowak has been called the
“Traveling Man” of Riverhead Raceway, and this past weekend the
Legends driver lived up to that name, bringing home not one –
but two – trophies from the Bethel Motor Speedway “Firecracker
Madness” weekend.
Nowak, who is presently tied for first place in the Riverhead
point standings, made his first appearance of the season at
Bethel for the two-day show. On Saturday, Nowak posted a
third-place finish in the first feature of the day, and he
backed it up with a runner-up finish in the next event. Both of
Saturday’s features were won by defending track champion Mike
Alcaro.
Sunday’s feature lineup was based on a complete redraw by all of
the Legends drivers, and Nowak started the race from the third
position. Fellow Long Islander Jim Byrne took off from the pole
and led the first lap, but was then overtaken by Nowak. Once out
front, Nowak never looked back and he claimed the segment win
over Raven Schrantz and Andrew Stotler. Byrne, who recorded a
top ten and a top five in Saturday’s races, was seventh in
Sunday’s feature.
As a result of his consistent finishes, Nowak sat atop the
standings at the conclusion of the weekend, followed by Todd
McCollum and Stephen Hershey. Byrne was sixth in the final
rundown.
