Dumicich and Gregor
Share Sunday Victory Lane Honors at Riverhead
Former Super Pro Truck champion Frank Dumicich Sr. of East
Quogue won his
first career Grand Enduro Sunday afternoon at Riverhead Raceway
and shared
victory lane with another first time winner, Ben Gregor of
Bridgehampton who
topped the 4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro action. Both races were
contested over
a 50-lap distance.
Driving a replica of the Junior Johnson/Darrell Waltrip
Budweiser Chevrolet
Monte Carlo Frank Dumicich Sr. took the lead from Don Carasiti
on the second
lap of the Grand Enduro, a lead he never relinquished. Carasiti
later
surrendered second to Joe Parcelluzzi on lap 5 and while
Parcelluzzi was
able to keep Dumicich in his sights he was never able to get
close enough to
mount a challenge for the lead. At the checkers it was Frank
Dumicich Sr.
scoring the first career win while Joe Parcelluzzi of West
Sayville was
runner-up in the Blue Point Auto Body Chevy. Sophomore driver
David Antos of
Lindenhurst was third in his Action Tire Chevy.
Like Dumicich, Ben Gregor also had a convincing performance
in his Gregor
Well Drilling entry taking the lead from Brian Kelly on the
second lap of
the 4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro and he also never looked back to
take home his
first career CARQUEST Auto Parts victory lane trophy. Robin
Vollmoeller Sr.
looped around Kelly for second on lap 3 and was able to stay
close to Gregor
for a spell, but as the race moved along Gregor would pull away
to a
comfortable lead. Vollmoeller of Riverhead was second in the
Solar Salon
Tanning machine, while Greg Harris of Manorville completed the
top three in
his SGS Stone Works racer.
Dominic Ranieri of East Northport took advantage of late race
misfortune of
Dege Russell of Rocky Point to win the first 8-Cylinder Enduro
in a 75-lap
contest. Russell had driven to a big lead when with less than
ten laps
remaining Russell suffered a flat right rear tire ending his bid
for
victory. That set-up a last lap race for the win between Ranieri
and Anthony
Pizzo of Lake Ronkonkoma with Ranieri in his Westhampton Auto
Salvage Chevy coming out on top. Pizzo was runner-up in his STS
Tire Works entry, while
Bob Baker of Shirley crossed the line third.
In the 50-lap 8-Cylinder nightcap Anthony Pizzo moved up one
spot from his
finish in the first race to score the win, with Bob Baker second
and Justin
Wahl of Centereach in the Krazy Kars entry finishing third.
Meanwhile
veteran racer "Handsome" Hank Hallock was involved in an
incident on the
infield. After a quick check-up at Peconic Bay Medical Center,
Hank was on
his way back to the track with nothing more than a few bruises.
Hallock
earlier in the day was 4th in the 4/6-Cylinder Truck event.
Defending 6-Cylinder Enduro champion Gene Burbol of
Brookhaven dominated the 50-lap feature event in his Gene's 112
Service Center racer to collect the
lion's share of the prize money after leading all 50 circuits.
Shawn Wanat
of Riverhead in the Iron Man Welding mount was second with
Jeffrey Gregor of
Bridgehampton third in the Gregor Well Drilling entry.
Anthony Pizzo scored his first of two victories on the day
when he won the
60-lap 4-Cylinder Enduro in his A. Voight Towing backed racer.
Steve "The
Pitbull" Trimboli of Freeport was runner-up in his Pitbull
Motors Mercedes,
while early race leader Robert Endlekofer of Miller Place placed
third in
his Family Automotive machine.
