Roger Maynor is an icon in the sport of Figure 8 racing. He
is the all-time crossover win leader at the Riverhead Raceway in
New York. His victory total stands currently at 101 triumphs
which is nearly 40 more that the late great Joe Biondolillo who
is second on that list. Since his initial checkered flag on June
15, 1985, Roger has wins in 24 different campaigns. He was the
track champion in 1992, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2008, and
2009. Maynor is in search of his fourth straight this year. His
Figure 8 legacy dates back to the famed Islip Speedway where
Speedrome Hall of Famer Sonny Thompson made his mark.
Roger started testing the crossover course back in 1976 when
he won rookie-of-the-year honors at the tender age of 16. Major
event victories have landed on his biography. He has won the
Winternationals in Florida as well as the Southeastern Figure 8
Championship. Maynor took home the northeast’s version of the
World title in 1986, 1991, and 1992. He showed his skills in
1995 winning a Figure 8 main event from Riverhead on ESPN. Roger
raced at the Speedrome back in 2000. He finished 9th in his
qualifying race before mechanical woes ended his World
Championship quest. Maynor made the races starting lineup timing
in 24th. He is sponsored by Barrasso and Sons Mason Supply and
is supported in the pit area by Mike Barasso, Artie Schenk,
Glenn Horton, Carl Baxter, Mark Marien, and crew chief Kevin
Schultz. We can’t wait to see this legend in just a few weeks in
Indianapolis.
In 1977 they said this race couldn’t be run, a three
hour-long Figure 8 contest. No car will last and no driver will
last is what everyone said. Now in its thirty-fourth year, the
World Figure 8 Championship is a racing classic. It is the only
race on the planet that a driver can win without being on the
track at the start or even seeing the checkered flag. Drivers
are placed in the results by total laps completed.
The 32-car starting grid is assembled with the 24 drivers who
locked-in through qualifying races on Friday September 10th. The
remaining 8 spots are tacked-on through unlimited time trials on
Saturday afternoon. Every other car will be lined-up as
alternates by their qualifying time. This line of alternates
will be added individually to the race as cars drop out of the
event. Over the years, racers have entered as an alternate and
drove their way to a third place finish. Those cars that leave
the surface can also return making this the only race that can
grow in size as the laps increase. Ticket information is
available by calling the Speedrome hotline at (317) 353-8206 or
