Jimmy Denis and Robin
Vollmoeller Share Riverhead Winners Circle Sunday
The Labor Day weekend of racing at Riverhead Raceway
concluded Sunday afternoon when "Jumbo" Jimmy Denis of Middle
Island won his second Grand Enduro of 2010. Veteran Robin
Vollmoeller Sr. of Riverhead won his first 4/6-Cylinder Truck
Enduro of the season, with both races going a distance of
50-laps. A sun splashed crowd enjoyed the afternoon of Enduro
racing that was complemented by a Monster Truck show starring
Bigfoot.
Sophomore driver David Antos broke out front of the Grand
Enduro field when Mike Boken waved his green flag and over the
first 15-laps he was chased by Phil LaManna with both drivers
searching for their first career victory.
Meanwhile Jimmy Denis who started the race deep in the pack in
16th methodically worked his way towards the front and by lap 16
had made his way to third and quickly reeled in LaManna in a
race for second. After dispatching of LaManna on lap 19, Denis
now faced the task of erasing a half a lap lead Antos had built
up and over a period of 10-laps the college freshman did just
that as he caught the race leader. On lap 30 with an inside pass
of David Antos, Jimmy Denis raced his All-American Marine Chevy
to the lead, a lead he'd never relinquish as he drove to his
third career win at just 18-years old. David Antos of
Lindenhurst who still finds himself looking for that elusive
first career win was runner-up in the CR Customs Chevy, while
Joe Parcelluzzi of W. Sayville placed third in the Blue Point
Auto Body Chevy.
In the 4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro the story was very much a
different one for Robin Vollmoeller. He blasted right into the
race lead at the drop of the green moving from his third place
starting berth to the lead with a pass of his stepson, pole
sitter Shawn Wanat. Vollmoeller, who ranks second on the
all-time Charger win list at Riverhead Raceway, quickly checked
out on the field and in fact before it was all said and done
he'd lap all but the second and third place trucks. At the
finish it was the Solar Salon Tanning racer of Robin Vollmoeller
taking a convincing win, with Rob "The Racer" McCormick of
Calverton second in the Ramirez Landscaping entry while Don
Nelson Jr. of Rocky Point was third in the Nelson Brothers
Racing machine.
Talk about dominating a day of racing, well, that is just
what tested tough Enduro veteran Dominic Ranieri of E. Northport
did in both the 8-Cylinder Enduro events. Of the 125-laps
contested in the two races, Dominic led all 125 circuits in his
Westhampton Auto Salvage Chevy. In the opening 75-lapper Anthony
Pizzo of Lake Ronkonkoma was second in the STS Tire Works
Caprice with Dwayne Sipila of Rocky Point third in the Aurora
Home Improvement mount. In the 50-lap nightcap Ranieri was
chased to the line by Bob Baker of Shirley in the MJM Plumbing
Chevy and Robert Duffus Jr. of Central Islip in the Krazy Kars
racer.
Gene Burbol of Brookhaven won his second consecutive
6-Cylinder Enduro to remain the point leader in the class with
one race remaining September 25th.
Burbol quickly put his Gene's 112 Service Center machine out
front and never looked back. Mitchell Pattern of Southold was
runner-up in the Spit's Speed Shop entry, while Jeffrey Gregor
of Bridgehampton was third in the Gregor Well Drilling car.
As far as Steve "The Pitbull" Trimboli of Freeport is
concerned there is no such gremlin as the sophomore jinx as he
won his third 4-Cylinder Enduro of 2010 in a 50-lap tilt.
Trimboli not only has won three of the seven races run in 2010
in his Pitbull Motors Mercedes Benz, but also heads up the
championship chase. Dennis Nelson of Rocky point in the Nelson
Brothers Racing racer was second and Billy Smith of Ronkonkoma
placed third.
