East End Kart Racing (EEKR) racers returned to Riverhead
Raceway last Sunday for their sixth race of 2010. In addition to
the racing, they held a special ceremony, presenting an award to
the raceway’s Chief Steward Mike Cappiello for his inspiring
dedication to the sport. Earlier this season, Cappiello was
seriously injured when an out-of-control race car hit him.
Despite the severity of his injuries, he couldn’t wait to return
to the track he loves… and it didn’t take too long – about a
month and a half after the incident. Cappiello says he grew
tired of sitting around the house on Saturday night and his best
therapy was returning to the track. The outpouring of support
for Cappiello and his family has been overwhelming, according to
Cappiello. The ceremony, which was taped by Captain Video's Bob
Woodford, is
just one more example the racing community's support for Cappiello.
EEKR President, Dave Brigati, knows firsthand of Cappiello’s
performance as a NASCAR official. On Saturdays, Brigati drives
his family-owned No. 98x WPW Growers Modified. Brigati says
Cappiello puts his whole heart into what he does and all the
competitors can go to Cappiello with any problem and Cappiello
will give a fair and honest answer.
In addition to the special award ceremony, EEKR’s future of
Long Island auto racing met with today’s stars of Riverhead
Raceway, as EEKR graduates brought their race cars from the
NASCAR Whelen All-American Series to display them and answer any
questions.
The East End Kart Racing will return in October for their
next event.
