Jimmy Denis Scores
Third Riverhead Grand Enduro Win
The summer of 2010 could very well be described as the summer
of young
"Jumbo" Jimmy Denis' life. The 18-year old Grand Enduro driver
captured his
third win of the season in a 50-lap event just three months
after graduating
High School which he celebrated by winning his first race of the
season back
on Father's Day in June. While Denis won the battle James
Charrier of
Shirley rode a three race win streak to start the season off
with to his
first career Grand Enduro championship.
After Mike Mulcahy and David Antos tussled for the lead over
the first three
laps of the Grand Enduro, Jimmy Denis of Middle Island powered
his way out
front on lap four bringing veteran Walter Stroud to second with
him. At
first Denis and Stroud, who ranks among all-time leading winners
of
8-Cylinder Enduros, staged a torrid battle for the lead amidst
lapped
traffic. However as the race wore on Denis was able to pull away
in his All
American Marine Chevy and drive off as Stroud would later battle
with Joe
Parcelluzzi for second.
At the checker flag it was yet another popular victory for
Jimmy Denis which
also allowed him to clinch second in the final point standings.
Joe
Parcelluzzi of W. Sayville drove the Blue Point Auto Body Chevy
to a second
place tally, while Walter Stroud of Yaphank had a solid run with
a third
place finish in the Gene's 112 Service Center Monte Carlo.
Although the final race didn't quite go the way James
Charrier would have
liked, his three race win streak to start the 2010 Grand Enduro
championship
chase would prove to be the key ingredient to the championship
for the
driver of the Clear Beer Draft Chevy. Charrier added a division
leading
fourth win in July.
They say the first career win is the toughest, but afterwards
the trips to
victory lane get easier and living proof of that theory would be
Ben Gregor
of Bridgehampton who notched his third 4/6-Cylinder Enduro
victory just a
little over a month after his first career win. Don Nelson Jr.
jumped to the
early race lead and over the first 20 circuits of the contest
seemed to be
the truck to beat. However Ben Gregor came along on lap 21 and
with an
inside pass took over the lead for good while Nelson found
himself dueling
with Robin Vollmoeller for second. That battle for second would
be music to
the ears of Ben Gregor in his Gregor Well Drilling Chevy S-10 as
he pulled
away to an easy win. Robin Vollmoeller of Riverhead moved his
Solar Salon
Tanning entry to second on lap 33 where he would finish the
50-lap race,
while Din Nelson Jr. of Rocky Point drove the Nelson Brothers
Racing Chevy
across the line third.
Rob "The Racer" McCormick of Calverton clinched his first
track championship
in the 4/6-Cylinder Truck class with his fine 4th place tally.
McCormick in
the Pete's Landscaping machine knew just what he had to do in
the final race
to sew up the title and once he raced his way to 4th he then
took a
conservative approach on his way to the 2010 crown. Rob scored
the opening
day victory to get his championship season off on the right
foot.
Dominic Ranieri of E. Northport, a tested tough Enduro
veteran, ended his
2010 campaign in spectacular style as he swept both ends of
their
doubleheader with the first win coming in a 75-lap race, while
the nightcap
went a distance of 50-laps. The victory in the first race for
Ranieri was
the third points paying win for the driver of the
1-800-RADIATORS Chevy, but
with Anthony Pizzo of Lake Ronkonkoma grabbing a third place
finish was not
enough to wrestle the title away. Pizzo in his STS Tire Works
entry
backed-up his Memorial Day win with four runner-up finishes
which proved to
be a springboard towards the title.
In the 75-lap 8-Cylinder Enduro Ranieri was chased to the
line by runner-up
Bob Haeger of Hampton Bays in the Haeger Home Improvement Chevy,
with
Anthony Pizzo riding his third place finish to the championship.
In the 50-lap tilt Ranieri was chased to the line by none
other than Anthony
Pizzo, while Phil LaManna of Smithtown crossed the line third in
the K-Mac
Electric racer.
Gene Burbol of Brookhaven clinched his second consecutive
6-Cylinder Enduro
championship in fine style as he led all 50-laps of their final
main event
of 2010. Burbol broke from his outside pole position to the race
lead from
where he never looked back on his way to his third consecutive
win to close
out the season in his Gene's 112 Service Center mount. Bob
Haeger was
runner-up with Mitchell Pattern of Southold third.
Like Burbol just moments before him, Steve "The Pitbull"
Trimboli of
Freeport put the wraps on his 4-Cylinder Enduro championship in
victorious
fashion winning his 4th race of the season and second straight.
Trimboli, a
sophomore driver put his Pitbull Motors Mercedes Benz right into
the lead
from his third starting position and he also never looked back
during the
course of the 75-lap race. Robert Endlekofer of Miller Place was
runner-up
in the race as well as the 2010 championship in his Family
Automotive
machine, while Bill Angell of Farmingville had his best outing
of the year
finishing third.
