The 11th Annual King
of the Mountain with $5,000 to win for the Modifieds
Sundance Vacations Speedway’s Super Bowl of motorsports is
approaching and the 11th annual event will be like none other,
as track Promoter, Joe Callavini will pay $5000 to the winner of
the 150-lap Modified blowout to celebrate the eleventh running
of the greatest asphalt show in PA. For years, the two-day event
has showcased talent, and with extended lap races and larger
purses, Callavini looks for the season ending event to be as big
as it ever was.
Similar to years past, each division will qualify and run their
feature event on the same day, and all divisions throughout the
weekend will be awarded double points, to decide the divisional
championships.
The weekend will kick off at the 1/3-mile asphalt oval near
Hazleton, PA on Friday, October 8 with open practice for all
divisions from 6-9 PM. Pit pass will cost $20 for the evening
and grandstand admission is free.
The Sport Modifieds, Late Models, Factory Stocks and TQ midgets
will run extended lap main events on Saturday, October 9. Time
trials for the Sport Modifieds will begin at 1:00 PM, followed
by heat race qualifiers for the support divisions. The afternoon
will be capped off with a $2,000 to win, 100-lap Sport Modified
main event.
Three big features will show case the racing on Sunday, October
10. Following practice for all divisions, the mighty Modifieds
will take center stage for qualifying. Time trials will be held
for the Modifieds and heat races will decide the starting
line-ups for the support divisions. Consi events will fill the
fields. After completion of the support division main events,
including the Street Stocks and FWDs, the evening will be capped
off with a $5000 to win, 150-lap main event for the Modifieds.
The feature winner of the Modified main event will earn a
guaranteed starting spot in this season North/Shout Shootout in
Concord, NC.
All entrants will draw for heat race or time trial starting
positions on race day. Twenty cars will start feature events,
and if needed, consi races will be run.
The top ten in driver points for all Sundance Vacations Speedway
divisions after the October 3rd racing program will be added to
the feature as a provisional, provided they do not qualify
through heat races, time trials or consi events. The drivers
must attempt to qualify in both, heat (time trials for Modifieds)
and consi in order to be eligible for a provisional spot.
Along with the regular stars of the track, big names are headed
to St. Johns, PA for the 150-lap contest. Chuck Hossfeld, a
well-known Modified ace plans to be behind the wheel of Tommy
Wanick’s ride and Brian DeFebo, a three time Modified champion
at the track will make his return to the speedway. Earl Paules
will attempt to win his second straight King of the Mountain at
the track and rumor has it that Bowman Gray competitor, “Jon
Boy” Brown, may be in action using his own car.
The list of famous names goes on, which definitely shows the way
drivers look forward to the yearly event, as it always gains
steam and popularity year after year.
In case of inadequate weather, the speedway has set the
following weekend (Oct. 16/17) to use as a make-up date.
