Riverhead Raceway to
Open 62nd Season on May 7
Riverhead Raceway owners and promoters Barbara & Jim Cromarty
announced today that the 62nd season of NASCAR stock car racing
at the historic venue will open its 2011 Whelen All American
Series season on Saturday May 7th, 2011 with a six division
program on tap. The 2011 slate features the return of drag
racing to Long Island for the first time in seven years as the
Holeshot Drag Racing Association 100 Foot Drags will appear on
five Sunday afternoon shows in 2011.
The 2011 opening night show will feature a 35-lap NASCAR
Modified feature event with the open wheel machines being joined
by the Late Models, Chargers, Blunderbusts, Legend Race Cars and
an 8-Cylinder Enduro. The NASCAR Modifieds will headline all 18
nights of the Whelen All-American Series with the support
classes to have a rotating schedule. Among the highlights for
the 600 horsepower NASCAR Modifieds in 2011 will be the second
NASCAR Hall of Fame 100, a double point event Saturday May 21st
and the popular Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek Memorial 77 which
will unfold on Saturday evening July 23rd, just one week before
the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Riverhead 200 on July 30th.
A new twist to the 2011 schedule will be the reduction of double
point races for not just the NASCAR Modifieds, but the Late
Models, Figure Eights, Chargers and Blunderbusts who will now
only compete in two double point races this season instead of
three. Aside from the NASCAR Hall of Fame 100 the second double
point race for the Modifieds will unfold Saturday evening July
2nd in the Cromarty Cup 50. The Super Pro Trucks will again have
one double point race in their 12-race 2011 season, that
unfolding on week two of the campaign, May 14th, their first
race of the new year.
The Chargers and Blunderbusts will go to post some 14 times in
2011, while the Legend Race Cars have 11 shows and the Late
Models and Figure Eights run a 10-race slate.
Another noticeable change from years past in the 2011 Riverhead
Raceway schedule is that there are just two stand alone Enduro
programs on tap on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, the
remainder of the season will find the various Enduro classes
racing on Saturday nights.
Sunday afternoons the Holeshot Drag Racing Association 100 Foot
Drags will bring back drag racing to the island for the first
time in seven years since the Westhampton Dragway shut its
doors. The HDRA events will take place May 22nd, June 26th, July
24th, August 28th and September 11th with all five shows
featuring a 12 noon start time and a 10:00 am pit opening. The
HDRA events have become very popular at both the Thompson
Speedway and Waterford Speedbowl in Connecticut.
Change is also headed towards the Demolition Derby ranks in 2011
as Riverhead raceway will introduce Mini Van Demolition Derbies
on May 28th, July 9th and August 20th as well as a Soccer
Demolition Derby on August 13th. The hardcore 8-Cylinder
Demolition Derby events will be staged June 18th, September 3rd
and the $1,500 to win National Demolition Derby event is set for
September 10th. One 4-Cylinder Demo will be held in 2011, that
on July 2nd.
The Full Size School Buses are back for the new season as well
with a Figure Eight race on May 28th and Demolition Derby events
for the 13-ton buses set for July 16th and August 6th.
Saturday August 6th aside from the Full Size School Bus
Demolition Derby stunt driving will also return to Long Island
as the Hell Drivers will thrill young and old alike with their
death defying show.
The Monster Trucks featuring Bigfoot will again highlight the
Labor Day weekend doubleheader at Riverhead Raceway September
3rd and 4th, while the popular East End Kart Racing go-kart
demonstration will take place on Saturday June 11th.
Two Fireworks shows are on board for July 2nd and the annual I
Love America Night August 20th and the extremely popular
Amusement Rides for the children will be on hand for select
shows in 2011 starting with the Memorial Day Weekend
doubleheader.
The 2011 Riverhead raceway season opener May 7th will be
preceded by two pre-season practice days Saturday April 23rd and
April 30th for all divisions and again feature free grandstand
admission with warm-ups starting at 12 noon both days.
