Riverhead Raceway Bring Drag Racing Back to LI With HDRA 100-Foot Drags

It has been some six years since an organized and legal drag race has been contested on Long Island at the old Westhampton Dragway but thanks to Barbara & Jim Cromarty of Riverhead Raceway and Jay Eastgate of the Holeshot Drag Racing Association, straight line racing returns with 100 Foot Drags at the Route 58 facility on Sunday May 22nd. All told five HDRA events will take place at Riverhead Raceway on a monthly basis in 2011.

Jay Eastgate has produced HDRA events at both the Thompson Speedway and Waterford Speedbowl ovals in Connecticut with the events becoming very popular among the most ardent drag racers. "Many drivers who have run 1250 or 1000 feet kind of come to our events with some questions on what you can do in just 100 feet, but after they make their first pass they all comment on how much fun this truly is" Jay noted. The HDRA 100 Foot drags utilize the Christmas tree starting light system and as of now Eastgate indicated the bracket racing events might be broken into four divisions or categories.

Barbara and Jim Cromarty feel the HDRA events at Riverhead Raceway will prove to be very popular and give Long Island drag racing enthusiasts an opportunity to either compete or just be a spectator for the 100 Foot Drags. The Westhampton Dragway closed its doors some six years ago and when it did many drag racers were left with a choice of towing to New Jersey or Pennsylvania or worse yet taking to the streets to get their racing fix. With the five HDRA races set for 2011 drivers no longer have to tow over a bridge or watch out for the highway patrol!

Aside from the May 22nd HDRA event at Riverhead Raceway the 100 Foot Drags will also compete on June 26th, July 24th, August 28th and September 11th with all events starting at 12 noon. Pit gates will open at 10:00 am.
