Chris Young Moves To Third On All Time Riverhead Raceway Win
List With 33rd Career Victory
Tested tough NASCAR Modified veteran
Chris young of Calverton moved into some very elite company
Saturday night at Riverhead Raceway when he drove to his 33rd
career NASCAR Modifieds victory at the 62-year old facility.
Chris now trails only "Charging" Charlie Jarzombek (63) and Jim
Malone Sr. (50) on the all-time win list at the famed quarter
mile.
Rookie Jason Agugliaro paced the first lap of the 35-lap tilt
before being overtaken by Chris Young on the second circuit,
with Jerry Solomito moving to second when Young made his pass
for the lead. A series of early race cautions led to double file
restarts and during one such restart on lap 3 Dave Brigati was
able to wrestle second away from Solomito. Once to second
Brigati spent the remainder of the race shadowing Young in
entering and exiting every turn. However as the race entered its
second half Chris Young was able to start to build a slight, but
yet comfortable advantage over Dave Brigati, one he'd enjoy all
the way to the conclusion of the race.
At the checker it was the Bronson Speedway Chevy of Chris Young
crossing the line first. " This win is pretty special" Chris
admitted afterwards, "Charlie J and Jim Malone Sr. were drivers
I idolized here and yet I still have Bill Park and Wayne
Anderson to contend with today". As to the new chapter in his
life regarding the Bronson Speedway in central Florida he and
his wife Ann bought in February Young noted, "yep, we went and
bought ourselves a race track recently, it's kind of our next
venture in racing and we'll make a go of it"
Dave Brigati of Calverton was runner-up in the John Redding
Motorsports Chevy, while Jerry Solomito of Islip turned some
heads with his third place finish in the Island Home
Improvements racer. Wayne Anderson of Yaphank and Timmy Solomito
of Islip completed the top five. Timmy, upon exiting his car,
was rushed to a local hospital with a suspected broken wrist
suffered during contact with five laps to go.
Shawn Patrick of Brightwaters notched his 4th career Late Model
victory when he warded off the persistant challenges of Peter "Buzzy"
Eriksen for the win. Shawn jumped right out front at the throw
of the green for the 25-lap affair with Roger Oxee giving chase
over the first half dozen laps. A 7th lap restart found Mike
Bologna slipping past Oxee for second and he'd spend the next 10
laps of the race chasing Patrick for the lead. With just seven
laps remaining in the race Peter Eriksen, seeking his 46th
career victory, moved by Bologna for second. Over the final six
laps of the race Eriksen turned up the heat on Shawn Patrick who
was equal to every challenge thrown his way on this night and he
would steer his Steve Mehner Race Engines Dodge to victory lane
having earned every bit of his triumph. Peter Eriksen of Baldwin
was runner-up for the second straight week in the Harley
Davidson of Nassau County Chevy, while Scott Kulesa of
Georgetown, Ma rallied for a third place finish in the Ranco
Sand & & Stone Pontiac. Scott had to come back from an early
race incident to salvage his night.
In the 20-lap Super Pro Truck main event Chris Turbush of
Riverhead collected his second win of 2011 leading the final
15-laps of the contest. "Dangerous" Dave Koenig showed the way
over the first five laps of the race before Chris Turbush, who
is a teammate to Dave, moved by on lap 6. Once out front Chris,
the three time and defending Charger champion at the track,
would stay out front in his East-West Marine Chevy to post his
5th career win in the class, which goes along with his 26
Charger victories. Dave Koenig of Freeport was runner-up in the
Nelson's Auto Salvage Chevy, while defending SPT champion Roger
Turbush of Riverhead was third in the Superior Systems Chevy.
The 20-lap Legend race Car feature was trimmed down to 16
circuits by the time limit with the race looking more like an
NHL Hockey game featuring plenty of pushing and shoving. The
race boiled down to a showdown between Timmy Solomito, who raced
his way out front at the drop of the green, and Chris Young who
was seeking his second straight win. On a single file restart on
lap 12 Young shoved Solomito from behind hard into the first
turn and was able to take over the race lead at that point.
However one good turn deserves another and on lap 16 Timmy did
just the same to Chris to recapture the race lead, a lead he
would not surrender again in his Riverhead Building Supply
racer. Kevin Nowak of Medford completed a late race rally for
second in his Racing Creations machine, while Justin Strumpf of
Selden was third in the Monster's Recycling racer. Young fell to
fourth late in the going.
Michael Rommeney of Maspeth dominated the Full Size School Bus
Figure Eight race to score the win over Don Fox of Flanders in a
10-lap race.
It was only fitting in the first ever Minivan Demolition Derby
that a driver making his first ever start would capture the gold
as was the case with Daniel Mulqueen of Levittown who had to
outlast his brother Matt for the victory. Matt was named Judge's
Choice, while James Kilkenny of Howard Beach was voted Fan's
Choice.
