Walter Stroud is Just "Grand" Sunday at Riverhead
Walter Stroud of Yaphank had a grand
afternoon Sunday at Riverhead Raceway when he topped the 50-lap
Grand Enduro event in convincing fashion, while Ben Gregor of
Bridgehampton drove to victory in the 50-lap co-headlining
4/6-Cylinder Enduro.
Via luck of the draw when entering the gates Sunday morning
Walter Stroud took full advantage of his front row starting
berth, quickly racing to the lead when the green flag dropped.
Kevin McCarthy tracked Stroud for the first 9 before he gave way
to David Antos on lap 10. Antos seemed to be making some
progress in reeling in the race leader when a lapped car slowed
his momentum on lap 22 costing him second place as well. Bob
Engelfried got by for Antos at that time for second, but there
was no catching Walter Stroud over the second half of the race
as he took a convincing win in the United Exhaust Shops Monte
Carlo. Walter lapped all but the top five finishers. Bob
Engelfried of Stony Brook was runner-up in the Clear Beer Draft
Chevy, while David Antos of Lindenhurst recovered for third in
the CR Customs Chevy.
In the 4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro Greg Harris bolted to the early
lead when the race got underway and was looking to grab a win
for his mother who was diagnosed with a medical condition
earlier in the week. Unfortunately for Greg, newcomer Joe Warren
Jr. hit the wall in turn one and came down the track directly in
front of Harris costing him the race lead which was then taken
by Jimmy Denis. Denis would pace the field until just a lap
after the halfway mark when he spun, handing the lead to Don
Nelson Jr. who was racing in close quarters with Denis when he
spun. Nelson stayed out front until the 35th circuit when Ben
Gregor came along in his Gregor Well Drilling Chevy to take the
lead and then pull away to victory. Don Nelson Jr. of Rocky
Point was runner-up in the Repo Joe entry with Rob "The Racer"
McCormick of Calverton third in the All-Pro Horticulture
machine.
"Mr Versatile" when it comes to Enduro racing at Riverhead
Raceway certainly is Anthony Pizzo of Lake Ronkonkoma and he
proved that Sunday when he drove to victory in the 75-lap
feature for the 8-Cylinder cars. Pizzo, wheeling the STS Tire
Stores Chevy took the lead early and never looked back. Dominic
Ranieri of East Northport was runner-up in his Spare parts
Racing Monte Carlo, while veteran Bob Baker of Shirley placed
third.
In the 50-lap nightcap for the 8-Cylinders Dominic Ranieri
backed up his second place victory earlier with a victory in his
Westhampton Auto Salvage mount and he was followed by Bob Baker
and Walter Stroud, who both had very successful afternoons.
Gene Burbol of Brookhaven ran away in the 50-lap 6-Cylinder
Enduro as he led all the way in his Gene's 112 Service Center
racer. Jeffrey Gregor of Bridgehampton in the Gregor Well
Drilling entry was second while Mitchell Pattern of Southold, a
late entry into the race was third.
In the 4-Cylinder Enduro that went a distance of 50-laps Steve
"The Pitbull" Trimboli of Freeport, the defending champion in
the class, scored the opening race win in his Pitbull Motors
Mercedes. Robert Endlekofer of Miller Place was runner-up in the
Family Automotive mount, while the Riverhead Bay Motors entry of
Dennis Nelson of Rocky Point placed third.
