NASCAR Modified Giants Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek to be
Remembered and Honored in July 23rd 77-Lap Memorial
Separately and collectively they were
perhaps the most successful,
influential and popular drivers to ever strap into a NASCAR
Modified either
on Long island or for that matter anywhere on the east coast and
Saturday
night Riverhead Raceway owners Barbara & Jim Cromarty will
remember and
celebrate the lives of "Tiger" Tom Baldwin, Richie Evans and
"Charging"
Charlie Jarzombek with a 77-lap Memorial race. The Baldwin,
Evans &
Jarzombek 77 will be sponsored by Repo Joe at Riverhead Bay
Motors, who in
fact will also sponsor the four feature events that are also
being presented
that evening.
Ironically enough the race actually
falls on what would have been Richie
Evans 70th birthday and with the recent announcement that the
"Rapid Roman"
would join the NASCAR Hall of Fame in January of 2012 in its
third class
makes the running of this year's 77-lap event that much more
important. Just
hours after Richie's induction to the NASCAR HoF was announced
the
Cromarty's announced that a special 61-lap race titled The
Richie Evans
NASCAR HoF Induction Celebration 61 would be run in his honor
Saturday
August 27th. Barbara & Jim who are on both the nominating and
final voting
panel for the NASCAR HoF thought it important that the former
nine-time
NASCAR National Modified champion have his own night for this
special honor.
"Charging" Charlie Jarzombek of Baiting
Hollow won the Riverhead Raceway
NASCAR Modified title five times in his illustrious career and
the quarter
mile oval is where Charlie along with his brother Ricky launched
what would
be a legendary career that finds Charlie still tops on the
track's all-time
win list at 63 wins. The closest active driver to that mark is
Chris Young
of Calverton who has earned 33 career victories in his
successful career,
Chris will be among those trying for the win in this year's 77.
As has
become tradition for the race Ricky Jarzombek will tow several
restored race
cars from Charlie's career to the track on July 23rd for display
and a quick
on track appearance.
"Tiger" Tom Baldwin visited Riverhead
Raceway's victory lane some 11-times
during his career and if not embarking on the NASCAR Whelen
Modified Tour
when the series was formed in 1985 perhaps that total would have
increased
and the entertaining driver might have also won a track title or
two.
However when it came to Tom Baldwin it didn't matter how many
wins or titles
he earned he meant so much more to the sport, always willing to
take young
drivers and crew chiefs alike under his wing offering advice at
every turn.
Howie Brode of E. Islip in fact was one of those and he won the
2010 edition
of the race in a car numbered with Tom's famed #7NY. Also of
note of course
is his son Tom Baldwin Jr., who in fact now owns his own Sprint
Cup team and
Kevin "Bono" Manion who continues to run a tribute car on
occasion on the
NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour in honor of Tom.
Repo Joe, who stages the once a month
used car extravaganza sales event at
Riverhead Bay Motors just east of Riverhead Raceway will be the
presenting
sponsor of the 2011 Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek 77. Repo Joe
sales events
feature the opportunity for car buyers to purchase a used or
repossessed car
for as little as $27 down and $79 a month. A Repo Joe sales
event will be
taking place the very same weekend as the 77-lap race at
Riverhead Bay
Motors. Repo Joe will again be bringing along The Wiseman and
Frank, the
morning show hosts from Long Island's oldies station B-103 to
the track with
plenty of giveaways.
Repo Joe will also sponsor the 20-lap
Figure Eight special as well as the
Charger, Blunderbust and Super Pro Truck feature events and all
those
classes will run their regular 20-lap distance.
Time trials for the NASCAR Modifieds
will kick things off at 5:15 pm and
feature event racing is set to start at 6:00 pm July 23rd at
Riverhead
Raceway. For further information please call 631-842-RACE or
