Riverhead to Celebrate Richie Evans NASCAR HoF Induction with
61-Lap Event
To celebrate the NASCAR Hall of Fame
Induction of nine-time NASCAR National Modified champion Richie
Evans, Riverhead Raceway promoters Barbara & Jim Cromarty will
present a 61-lap feature event this Saturday August 27th with
the race titled the Richie Evans NASCAR HoF Induction
Celebration 61. The Cromarty's are part of both the nominating
committee and the panel that votes in the five annual inductees
to the NASCAR Hall of Fame and made the announcement of this
special race just hours after the class of 2012 was announced in
May.
Richie Evans who resided in Rome, New
York was both a very successful and popular driver when the
NASCAR National Modified championship title chase, a forerunner
to the current NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, brought the "Rapid
Roman" to Long Island. Evans found most of his success at the
tricky fifth of a mile Islip Speedway where he won 17 feature
events, most of which were of the 100 or 200 lap variety. Richie
won twice at the Freeport Stadium and his last victory on Long
Island came in August of 1985, just two months before his
untimely death when he won a 200 lap NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour
race at Riverhead Raceway. Aside from his accomplishments on the
three Long Island ovals Richie was a beloved figure post race in
the pit area where he would stay around and meet all his fans no
matter whether he had another NASCAR point paying race the next
day or not.
The management of Riverhead Raceway is
encouraging Richie's legions of fans and all Riverhead Raceway
fans to wear orange for the Richie Evans NASCAR Hall of Fame
Induction Celebration 61 which is a time trial event that will
carry single points towards the NASCAR Whelen All American
Series track title. The winner of the race will take home a
beautiful trophy as well a guaranteed starting position in the
King of the Mountain 150 set for Sunday October 9th at the
Mountain Speedway in St. Johns, Pa.
The 2011 NASCAR Modified championship
chase has come down to current point leader Justin Bonsignore
and former three time champion John Fortin who both reside in
Holtsville, while Shawn Solomito of Islip, John Beatty Jr. of
Merrick and Wayne Anderson of Yaphank complete the current top
five. Anderson who chased both Richie Evans and Jerry Cook for
NASCAR National Modified championships back in the day would
love to pick-up a win in this special race.
The Late Models will go 50-laps Saturday
also utilizing a time trial format for their race and will be
joined by the Chargers, Blunderbusts and a Grand Enduro. Time
trials for both the Late Models and NASCAR Modified will start
at 5:00 pm and feature racing will begin at 6:00 pm.
