$1,500 Awaits Winner of Miller Lite National Demolition Derby
Championship Sept. 17
Saturday evening September 17th at
Riverhead Raceway promoters Barbara & Jim Cromarty will host the
annual Miller Lite night National Demolition Derby Championship
with the winner of the prestigious contest walking off with a
handsome $1,500 for his efforts. A full card of Late Model,
Figure Eight, Charger, Blunderbust and Super Pro Truck racing is
also on the Miller Lite night card that starts at 5:00 pm.
Former World and National Demolition
Derby champion Bob "The Killer Bee" Benison of Lindenhurst is
the defending champion of the National Demolition Derby contest
and he's gotten himself warmed-up with two victories at
Riverhead Raceway in 2011. Among the local drivers out to
dethrone Benison will be his nephew James "The Killa" Kilkenny
of Howard Beach, "The Misery Machine" Jason Savoy of Lake
Panamoka, "Maniac" Matt Mulqueen of Levittown and "The 911" of
George Astacio of Shirley. Other drivers who have run in 2011
include "Pistol" Pete Mikos, "Jumping" Joey Palmeri, Andrew &
Richard Fowler and Bob Genovese, it's expected some of these
warriors will also be gunning for the big payday! Coming out of
a short retirement for this race will be popular Mike "Gravel"
Buksa of East Islip.
Demolition Derby officials are also
expecting some "invading" drivers as Craig "Oliver" Westerfeld
of Middletown, NY, a former Miller Lite World Champion has
expressed interest in competing as has the father & son
combination of Eugene and Nicholas Malverty of Tampa, Fla.,
Jimmy Mann of Raynham, Ma and Scott McNamee of Raleigh, NC.
It should be noted that there are no
qualifying heats for the National Championship event, everyone
moves right into the $1,500 to win feature and for rules and
entry blanks teams should visit
www.riverheadraceway.com.
On the stock car portion of the Miller
Lite program the Late Model championship will be determined in a
50-lap feature event with Peter "Buzzy" Eriksen, Scott Kulesa
and Mike Bologna all in the mix for the title. The "World
Famous" Figure Eights will dare to cross the intersection and
their championship chase finds Arne Pedersen, Roger Maynor and
teammates Mike Mujsce and Tom Ferrara all in the hunt. They'll
run a 20-lap main event.
The Chargers, Blunderbusts and Super Pro
Trucks will all race 30 laps on the night and while the
Blunderbusts championship might already be determined by the
17th, the Chargers and Super Pro Truck titles will go down to
the wire. Chris Turbush is seeking his fourth straight Charger
championship and he'll need to hold off Chris McGuire if he is
to be the first driver in the 62-year history of the track to
win four in a row in the Chargers. Over in the Super Pro Truck
paddock area the championship race is still very active between
"Dangerous' Dave Koenig, Lou Maestri and Frank Dumicich Jr.
After the 30-lap SPT race Lou & Tracy Maestri will present the
top three crew chiefs with trophies in the memory of their
fallen crew chief & friend Joe DeGangi and the popular Carl
Rackoff.
It is sure to be an evening of thrills,
drama and spills at Riverhead Raceway September 17th capped off
with the grand daddy of all Demolition Derbies, the Miller Lite
National Demolition Derby Championship.
