Riverhead's 63rd
Season Schedule Announced
Since 1977 Barbara & Jim Cromarty have
been drafting a race schedule
preparing for a new race season and perhaps the 2012 Riverhead
Raceway
schedule is the most comprehensive and exciting schedule they've
ever
drafted. Featuring many new twists for the NASCAR Whelen
All-American
Series as well the Enduro racers of the quarter mile the new
season will
debut with a return to the Opening Weekend format Saturday
evening May 5th
at 5:30 pm and Sunday afternoon May 6th at 12:30.
While many track operators and promoters focus on running the
same
schedule of events pretty much on the same dates and in the same
format as
the season before, Barbara & Jim Cromarty since their very first
promotional season at the famed Islip Speedway have never been
concerned
with change and the Riverhead Raceway schedule is full proof of
that
theory.
New for 2012 at Riverhead Raceway are the Twin 30's for the
NASCAR
Modifieds who will get to test the new format right out of the
gate on
opening night May 5th for the first of three such races and will
also find
a Twin 30 event for week two, May 12. The final of the three
Twin 30's
will unfold June 2nd. The Twin 30 NASCAR Modified events are
just part of
what most likely will be the most exciting and entertaining
season ever on
Long Island for the NASCAR Modifieds and feature time trial
qualifying.
The popular NASCAR Hall of Fame 100 set for May 19th will be
another early
season jewel on the 2012 Riverhead Raceway calendar and be
followed later
in the summer by the prestigious Cromarty Cup 50 Saturday July
7th. Just
one week before the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will visit Long
Island on
Saturday July 28th, Riverhead Raceway will again honor three
legends of
NASCAR Modified racing with the Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek 77 on
July
21st. The 77 in 2011 served as a tune-up for the Lighthouse
Mission 200 by
Baldwin Automotive with Ronnie Silk the 2011 NASCAR WMT champion
scoring
the win in the 77, while 2011 Riverhead Raceway champion Justin
Bonsignore
won the 200. The NASCAR HoF 100, Cromarty Cup 50 and Baldwin,
Evans &
Jarzombek 77 will also find time trial qualifying.
Each and every week of 2012 the Late Models, Figure Eights,
Chargers,
Blunderbusts, Super Pro Trucks and Legend Race Cars will all
supplement
the NASCAR Modifieds at Riverhead Raceway. It was disclosed a
few weeks
back that the double point races for all division would be
dropped for the
new season of racing as well as the fact that the Legend Race
Car class
would fall under the NASCAR sanctioning banner. Over in the
Enduro pit
area it was also announced that the 4 and 6-Cylinder cars would
be
combined into one class.
Among some of the other new and exciting aspects of the 2012
schedule, the
Late Models will race Twin 15's early on in the season on
Memorial Day
Weekend May 26th and that race will find the class using time
trials for
qualifying. For the first time in their 49-year history the
Figure Eights
will time trial for qualifying positions on Saturday July 21st,
the same
night as the Baldwin, Evans & Jarzombek 77 for the Modifieds.
The Legend
Race Cars will also test the clock for a feature event race on
Saturday
June 9th, which will also be the annual East End Kart Racing
exhibition as
many Legend drivers have come from the go-kart ranks. The
Charger,
Blunderbust and Super Pro Trucks will also test the clock at
various times
in 2012 and race in single point, extra distance races.
Aside from all the great NASCAR Whelen All-American series and
Enduro
Racing being presented in 2012 there are a few new twists in the
family
entertainment events at Riverhead. A spectacular Laser Show will
be
presented Saturday August 4th and the very next week Megasaurus,
a fire
breathing car eating Monster will visit.
The wildly popular School Bus Demolition Derbies will take place
with the
first set for Saturday June 30th, which ironically enough is
just 24 hours
after the last day of school across Long Island, the second
School Bus
Demo will take place August 18th. Fireworks are set for the
annual
Independence Day celebration July 7th as well for I Love America
Night
August 25th. For the youngsters Barbara & Jim Cromarty will
provide a Free
Amusement Ride in turn three June 30th, July 7th and then for
four
consecutive shows from August 7th through the 25th.
The usual fare of both 4 and 8-Cylinder Demolition Derby
contests will be
presented during the season with a 4-Cylinder Demolition Derby
kicking
things off on Saturday May 26th. The Demolition Derby season
will
culminate with the National Demolition Derby Championship
Saturday
September 15th. It was recently announced that all the divisions
racing on
that card would run in non-point feature events, however the
National
Demolition Derby Championship will indeed pay points towards the
2012
title.
The 100 Foot Drags will return for 2012 and actually have their
season
opening event prior to the NASCAR and Enduro openers on Sunday
April 29th.
