10 to Go with Jayson White
10 to Go this week is with the driver of the No. 45 Charger car, Jayson White.
When did you start racing?
Jayson White: Two years ago. Actually, a year and three-quarters. I’ve been following Bobby (Gardner) since I was a little kid. I’ve been here since I was about five or six when he won the Blunderbust championship. And I did the drill team fire department racing in Hicksville.
How many types of cars have you raced? What are they, and which one is your favorite?
White: One and only one. The Charger car. I haven’t had a chance to run anybody else’s car yet in practice or anything.
What track do you want to race at the most that you haven’t gotten to yet?
White: Bowman-Gray (Stadium, N.C.). I’d really like to get down there. But I haven’t raced anywhere else but here.
Do you have any superstitions or routines that you do each week? Lucky Charms?
White: Two superstitions, but I can’t say them. Routines? I stop at the same bathroom every time I come out here at exit 55. I also have my grandfather’s card in the car and I keep red rosary beads with me. And I wear black socks every race day.
What is your favorite racing moment?
White: Last year last race of the season I got my first top five. I started way in the back and got all the way to the front.
What is your most embarrassing racing moment?
White: I don’t really think I’ve had one yet, but usually I’m just involved in everything.
How many injuries have you suffered from racing? Your worst?
White: No injuries. None yet.
Do you have a nickname? If so, how did you earn it? If not, why do you think you don’t have one?
White: No, I don’t have a nickname. I don’t think I’ve earned one yet truthfully. I’m still new to this sport.
How does your family handle you doing something that is so potentially dangerous?
White: Truthfully, I’m the only one that does anything dangerous in my family. Sky-diving, fire department racing, running into burning buildings. I’m the only one that takes chances.
