NWMT Riverhead 200 Cancelled Due to Rain
Saturday evening’s Riverhead 200 at Riverhead Raceway has been cancelled. After running a practice session for one hour, rain quickly soaked the .25-mile speedway.
At approximately 7 p.m., track officials gathered around the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour trailer to announce to teams that the 200-lap event would not run. According to track officials, there was no leeway to run the race on Sunday due to a go-kart event that is scheduled to take up the majority of the day. Due to the local restrictions Riverhead Raceway is unable to hold events after the month of September therefore, no make-up date will be scheduled.
During the lone practice session of the day, Justin Bonsignore was the quickest car at 12.088 seconds. He was followed by Riverhead Raceway regular Tom Rogers, Timmy Solomito, 2013 NWMT champion Ryan Preece and Ron Silk in the top five.
Instead of running 14 races this year, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will now consist of 13 events. Currently, Doug Coby leads Bonsignore by four points for the championship lead. The title will be decided in the next three races with events at New Hampshire, Stafford and the season-finale at Thompson.
The Chargers, Blunderbusts and Legends events were all cancelled for the day as well with no make up date announced.
