Coby Overcomes Black-Flag To Grab Fourth NWMT Win
Doug Coby’s march to a third NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship included a rally through the field Wednesday night.
Coby rebounded from a late-race penalty to take the Budweiser King of Beers 150 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. The No. 2 Dunleavy’s Truck & Trailer Repair/A&J Romano Construction Chevrolet took the lead on the race’s final restart with eight to go and Coby drove to his third straight win at the .625-mile oval.
Championship contender Woody Pitkat settled for second and regained the points lead following the 10th of 15 races. Ryan Preece, who began the night with a four-point lead on Pitkat, finished sixth.
Pitkat now leads Preece by one point, and Coby is eight points back.
Pitkat had a shot at taking down the win after contact with race leader Ted Christopher sent Christopher spinning in Turn 4. However, a subsequent caution with 12 laps remaining bunched the field again and gave Coby the shot he needed at the lead.
Todd Szegedy, Eric Goodale and Donny Lia rounded out the top five.
Patrick Emerling, who picked up his second straight Coors Light Pole Award earlier in the day, finished seventh. He was followed by Justin Bonsignore, Christopher and Timmy Solomito.
The race aired live on FansChoice.tv, with play-by-play provided by Victory Lane Radio.
The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour returns for another mid-week show on Wednesday, Aug. 19 for the Bush’s Bean 150, the annual combination race with the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
