10 to Go with Brandon Turbush

This week’s 10 to Go is with driver of the No. 37 Charger car, Brandon Turbush.

How did you start racing?

Brandon Turbush: I’ve been coming [to the track] since I was 3 months old, my dad [Rusty], my uncle raced, my other uncle raced, my cousin raced, pretty much my whole family [has raced]. I raced go-karts when I was 6 and just raced one season and that was it.

How did you get into the Charger car?

Turbush: I got an offer last year to race a guy’s car and we raced the last three races. Then this year James Beck said we could race his car and that’s pretty much how we got started.

What have you liked about racing at Riverhead Raceway this year?

Turbush: I’ve been getting the experience each week, just coming out here and learning. [Also] coming out here and seeing old friends that I used to have at the track.

What else do you like about racing?

Turbush: I’m spending Saturday’s with my dad, some nights we work on the car and it’s more bonding time and stuff.

You run track, how have you balanced that and racing?

Turbush: That’s kinda hard, like actually all week I was at a cross country camp in upstate [New York] so my dad and Sam my crew guy have been working on the car all week and then I got back and loaded up the car. Back when we started, we started 5 weeks in because we had to put the car together and that was a challenge because we couldn’t work on weekends for track meets. After school we would go out to Hampton Bays to work on it until 6:30 p.m.

What’s going to happen when school starts again?

Turbush: Once September comes I’m gonna have [cross-country] meets so I’ll do those in the morning and then come [to the track] a little late so I’ll miss practice so it’s kinda hard with track.

Do you have any superstitions?

Turbush: I usually wear [the same shirt]; it’s my dad’s championship shirt. I always wear the same shorts, and my friend put a bible in the car, that’s pretty cool I guess that’s a superstition.

You don’t believe in not wearing green or eating peanuts superstitions?

Turbush: I guess I have green on now so, no.

Where do you see your career in the future?

Turbush: This year I want to finish out with the Chargers and then next year either race Chargers or move to Late Models if we still have this car. And then eventually I want to race a Modified.

Do you still want to run track while racing at Riverhead?

Turbush: I hope so, I’m looking into a few colleges for track and cross-country so hopefully I’ll be able to balance that schedule. I guess with college I wouldn’t be able to run the full season but, I’ll be able to race [during the summer]. That will be a challenge but, I could probably do it.
