Maynor Captures his 110th Win at Riverhead Raceway

On the last night of ‘Saturday Night’ racing at Riverhead Raceway, five out of seven divisions were in attendance to close out the season strong. The Blunderbusts, Super Pro Trucks, Chargers, Late Models and Figure 8s were all on the schedule for Miller Lite Night and Golden Auto Body Night along with the National Championship Demolition Derby.

Every division was set to time trial and the first out of the pit gate were the Blunderbusts. Jimmy White Jr. set fast time with a time of 14.965; he picked fourth out of the redraw of the top eight qualifiers. At the start of the 30-lap race, Tim Mulqueen held onto the lead however it was short lived when on lap six Jimmy White Jr. came past him from the outside. As the caution-free race continued White’s lead over the remainder of the field grew to the length of a straightaway till finally he took the checkered capturing his fifth win of the season.

The next division out for the night was the Super Pro Trucks. Roger Turbush had set fast time earlier and picked eighth out of the redraw, Lou Maestri chose seventh, Brian McElearney sixth, Mark Stewart fifth, Bobby Gardner fourth, Mike Albasini third, Rob Bader second while Dave Koenig who qualified eighth was left with the pole position. During hot laps the No. 8 of Mark Stewart was leaking fuel onto the track due to a loose gas cap. Going into lap two, Brian McElearney, Lou Maestri and Mike Albasini were battling three wide coming out of turn four. When they were coming down the front straight McElearney and Maestri tangled but were able to regain their composure by turn one. However everyone at the rear of the field lost control upon their collision causing a domino effect in turns one and two. Only eight cars remain on the track for the restart of lap one. Mark Stewart, Kevin Scharfenberg and Amanda Anderson did’t return from the pits. Coming out of turn four on lap two, Bobby Gardner and Rich Giordano tangle giving Gardner a left front flat. Gardner ended up coming into the infield in order to avoid a caution. On lap six, a strong battle for the third position between Roger Turbush, McElearney and Maestri broke out. By lap 13, Maestri had finally taken control of the third position. For the rest of the race everyone remained single file with the 29 of Dave Koenig, who lead all 30-laps, taking the checkered and capturing his first win of the 2013 season.

The Charger 30-lap feature was next on the schedule. Ray Minieri who set fast time ended up picking eighth out of the redraw and just like the Super Pro Trucks, Jayson White who qualified eighth was left with the pole position. Before the completion of the first lap, the 12 of Richard Wilson and the 33 of Derek Stachecki tangled on the backstretch causing both to crash into the wall hard. Though both suffered heavy damage, Wilson was able to return for the restart while Stachecki returned for the restart of lap five. By lap four, Jayson White loses the lead to John Baker and ends up falling toward the middle of the field. A clash on lap five between CJ Lehmann and Chris Turbush on the front stretch causes Turbush to spin bringing out a caution. Eric Zeh who started fifth, takes the lead on lap nine with the 20 of Chad Churilla not far behind. As the white flag flew, Churilla was trying everything he could in order to pass Zeh but it was 2013 Charger Champion who took the checkered coming down the front straight.

At the start of the 50-lap Late Model feature event, Roger Oxee jumped out to an early lead. On lap three, Chris LaSpisa blew a right rear tire coming out of turn four and in order to avoid a caution he turned into the infield. The races first caution wasn’t thrown until lap 36, when Kevin Metzger spun in turn four. On the single file restart, Oxee still remained in the lead with Jeremy McDermott and Mike Bologna who set fast time not far behind him. McDermott was able to pass Oxee on lap 38 when the handling on his No. 39 machine came loose, which caused him to slip toward the rear of the pack. When the checkered was thrown it was Jeremy McDermott, the 2013 Late Model Champion who captured his last win of the season.

In the 20-lap Figure 8 feature, Roger Maynor takes the lead before the completion of lap one. The first caution is thrown when Scott Pedersen spins in turn one causing the 9 of Gary Fritz Jr. to bump into him. The next caution is brought out at the start of lap eight, when CJ Lehmann, who set a new track record during time trials, spins coming out of turn two into the intersection. Another caution flag flies immediately after the restart when Lehmann puts Gary Fritz Jr. into the turn one wall. On lap 10, John Vullo and Arne Pedersen collided in turn three when Vullo decided to go high and Pedersen decided to go low into the turn. Though it seemed like a harmless racing incident, Pedersen was sent to the rear of the field for rough riding while Vullo was able to keep his position. Coming out of turn two at the start of lap eleven, Tom Ferrara spun and Gary Fritz Jr. collided into him after battling hard against CJ Lehmann and Arne Pedersen. The collision caused Fritz Jr. to break his left front suspension and he was forced to retire for the remainder of the race. Mike Mujsce and Kenny Hyde Jr. mesh coming out of turn four while battling for the third position on lap 15. The field restarted single file with Maynor holding tight to the lead. With two laps to go, Brandon Hubbard and Maynor almost collide within the intersection. When the checkered flag flies, Roger Maynor captures his 110th win at Riverhead Raceway.

“Originally for time trials we had the car set up for the oval,” said Maynor, “but then we heard that afterward we would have to take the car to impound and we wouldn’t be able to touch it. So we had to readjust it back for the eight and thankfully it all worked out.”
