Fanfare with Darren McCabe
LongIslandJam.com is bringing back Fanfare, where each week we will pick out a couple of fans from the stands and highlight why they decided to take in the action at Riverhead Raceway.
This past week we interviewed seventeen year old, Darren McCabe from East Northport, NY. Darren has been coming to Riverhead as far back as he can remember with his family and friends and because of this he has found a special place in his heart for Riverhead Raceway. He has traveled to other tracks throughout the northeast such as Thompson Speedway (Conn.) and Stafford Motor Speedway (Conn.) but nothing has compared to Riverhead according to McCabe. “It’s my home track and it always will be,” said McCabe, “I hope it never closes, especially since it’s the only track left on Long Island.”
Though it was a hard decision for Darren, considering he loves all the divisions that race regularly at Riverhead, he realized that the Modifieds were at the top of the list. “There is nothing like the sound of a ground pounding Modified on the track,” said McCabe.
Along with it being one of his favorite divisions, some of his favorite drivers race in the division as well. They include the Solomito Brothers, Jerry Jr., Shawn and Timmy. “I think that it’s pretty cool that all three of them can be so competitive and run each other as hard as they do,” said McCabe.
Darren recently acquired a racing go-kart from his uncle who used to race go-karts at Medford Raceway. With the help of Eric Zeh, driver of the No. 34 Charger car, Darren hopes to have his go-kart in race ready condition by the end of the 2015 season.
